From a personal perspective, losing that late season game in football is better than it was around the time I was at Clemson, when we seemed to lose the first or second game every year then go on a run after that. 1977 we lost the first game, then won seven in row before weird late season. 78 we lost second game to Georgia 12-0, then won out. 79 lost second game to Maryland, then had a little run. 80 lost second game to GA. 82 lost first game to GA, tied BC, won out. 83 lost to BC, tied GA, won out. The point is I kinda grew up seeing us lose early and knowing undefeated was out the door (other than 81 of course). And back then, with fewer bowls and no playoffs, that meant you were more or less out of the race two weeks into the season.
At least now with a loss you can still be a contender, and losing late in the season means you're already ranked pretty high by that point and drop just a few spots but are still within striking distance.
