Let your water faucets drip and keep your heat up

Dec 22, 2022, 5:23 PM

to avoid water pipes freezing next few days.

I went out just now and checked my pool filter to make sure

Dec 22, 2022, 5:54 PM

it was circulating. The strainer basket was so full of leaves, the pump was barely moving any water. Hand dipped out all the leaves, MAN, that water must be down around 45-50 degrees, was like daggers in my hand. Not hard to imagine those poor Titanic passengers not surviving long in 29 degree water.

At least I got the leaves cleared, back flushed the filter, and set the pump running on high. That will keep the water moving enough not to burst anything. It is not supposed to get below freezing around here until tomorrow morning anyway, but didn't want to take any chances the weatherman blew the forecast tonight!

Tomorrow night and Sat night are the two we have to worry about. I have been contemplating draining my pool below the bottom of the skimmers and then draining filter and pump.

Better have it running if you dont drain the filter.

All the stores near me in Greenville are out so I made my own out of foam rubber, pipe insulation and duct tape.

should I leave my pet dog inside the house or out on the deck?

Your dog should be brought inside and your wife/girlfriend/mother should put you out on the deck.

Over the years, we've had pipes burst 4-5 times

Dec 23, 2022, 12:35 AM

If the temperature gets below ~28 degrees for any length of time, we completely shut off the water.

In Houston, this happens 1-2x per year. We are doing this ~8pm tonight, Friday evening and Saturday evening.

I can't go through it again.

Do you just completely drain everything nightly once you shut it off to avoid any water freezing overnight?

Don’t turn your heat up. If anything, turn it down. Dripping your faucets will be fine if you’re worried about bursting pipes. There is going to be a big strain on the power grid, and if everyone turns their heat up it’s going to increase the likelihood of losing power. Turn it down, put on a hoodie, use a fireplace, etc…

I'm glad I live in Arizona and don't have to worry about things like this anymore. I have other things to worry about, like running out of water, but at least being cold isn't one of them...
