It’s the offense, stupid

Nov 29, 2022, 9:39 AM

Our defense is fine. Look at the two losses, and the defense could hold up only so long while the offense sputtered, due mostly to play calling.
Look, DJ is who he is, and that ain’t changing. We’ve asked too much of him.
Shipley and the others backs were getting good yardage against 9-man fronts. Why force throws when DJ is obviously struggling.
A QB friend pointed out that after getting hit hard on one play and limping, he was not going to be able to throw. That’s why his late-game throws were so off.
Hate to say it, but Streeter is the problem. He’s a great guy and was as tough a QB as I’ve ever seen, but his situational play calling sucks. Dabo can deflect all he wants, but that’s the plain truth.
Take away our strong defense and a couple solid performances by DJ and we’re easily 7-5 right now. We’re not as good as we hoped to be; our record is better than it should be.
Lots of variables, but two things are required for playoff contenders: great defensive line and a solid QB. Add in the wildcard of play-calling, and the QB quality requirement can go up or down. On this year’s team, it would take TL or DW to overcome Streeter, and even that might not be enough.
We’re spoiled, even though our last great team was 2018. This year’s DL might’ve made a difference on the 2019 team. Same in 2020. Hopefully Dabo will make some offseason moves and get us back on top.
Go Tigers! Beat the Heels!

Our defense got embarrassed twice so there is enough blame to go around.

Any defense that can't get off the field is going to get embarrassed. I'll give you a prime example.

In 2014 when we played UGA the game was a UGA 3 or 4 point lead going into the 4th quarter. We ended up getting blown out.

I remember arguing with people after that game that we had a top 5 defense (because that's what my eyes told me) but because we couldn't sustain any drives and refused to let Watson play more than a handful of snaps our defense was gassed. We ended up 3rd in the country.

Yes we have secondary issues. Yes, this defense has taken a step back from last year. But this defense is better than the statistics indicate. Our offense just barely gives them a blow.

You can't brag about being "too deep" and then complain about being "gassed" in the second quarter, which is what this board does.

Offense is terrible I agree. 3 and outs are killers. But giving up 50 yard chunk plays is now the norm for our defense. Holes will probably pass for 600 yards Saturday no matter what level of terrible the offense displays. Expectations at a 10 year low for this team.

Our defense isn't fine either. It has major issues, which is surprising for how stacked I thought we were.

The whole team is underperforming and has been since 2019. At some point, you have to accept the fact that we are poorly coached with really good players.

Can't thumbs up this enough, well said!

The longer I sit on this one, the more it seems to me like our Offensive play-calling and WR talent are the biggest gaps. DJ is what he is. I don't love folks bashing him...he's not purposely driving the program into the ground. He's doing his best.

Could he step up into the pocket or get rid of balls quicker? Absolutely. But our guys aren't getting open. And when they do get open, those 50/50 balls are less than that.

Side note....does anyone else hate the way the TV broadcasts play? It's zoomed in on the line of scrimmage, so you cannot see the WR's running their routes. It sometimes looks like DJ is just standing around and you're dying for him to get the ball off. But then they show the replay and nobody could get open.

I agree!

The defense score 9 points Saturdayy. 9 points.

And, had to save the day at the goal line a couple times otherwise, the final score is out of hand.

Until we are able to threaten other teams with our offense; the defense won't have the stats! For example.

Let's say we are up 14 -0 and the offense is moving the ball on sustained drives.

It tends to influence the opponents play calling. They tend to be a lot less balanced and more predictible because they feel the pressure to score points(b/c they are threatened by our offense).

If a team is barely moving the football though(remember our 1st TD wasn't by the offense) a team feels like: they can run and pass equally! Most defenses try to handicap the offense and make them one dimensional. Which can be done; if you are stout in shutting down whatever it is you are trying to stop; plus your offense can "threaten them"! Create a greater sense of urgency on the opponent and they likely go into only pass plays! Which allows you to set your defense. Which should make the opponent easier to guard "in theory"!

I agree. Our biggest issue is far and away the offense!
