Braves have signed Ervin Santana

Mar 12, 2014, 7:43 AM

Desperate times, desperate measures.

Santana is 31 years old. He won 16 or more games three times with the Angels, with whom he had spent his entire career before last year with the Royals.

He is 29-35 over the last three seasons, but with an ERA that jumped around: 3.38, 5.16, and 3.24 last year.

Signing Santana will cost the Braves a first-round draft pick.

Why does it cost a draft pick?

Mar 12, 2014, 7:48 AM

I'm not familiar with the MLB draft process.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's similar to the old "offering arbitration" procedure.

Mar 12, 2014, 7:50 AM

The Royals extended a qualifying one-year offer to Santana, which he rejected. So the Royals get a draft pick in compensation, and whichever team signs him loses a draft pick.

Mar 12, 2014, 8:01 AM

Ahhh... that makes sense, thanks

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

whats the equation for "qualifying offer"***

Mar 12, 2014, 9:32 AM [ in reply to It's similar to the old "offering arbitration" procedure. ]

All qualifying offers are the same.

Mar 12, 2014, 9:35 AM

It's a one-year deal for the a salary that is the average of the top 125 salaries for the previous year. Not sure what the number was this year. Probably $13-14 million.

So he didn't get much, if anything from rejecting that qualifying offer, except that he now pitches for Atlanta instead of Kansas City. He was hoping for a 4-yr deal, I'm sure, but never got it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just read that the qualifying offer was $14.1 million

Mar 12, 2014, 9:39 AM

So the Braves gave that exact amount to him. Pretty interesting.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Any word on when Stephen Drew will be overpaid?

When we get drunk, we fall asleep.
When we fall asleep, we commit no sin.
When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.
So, let's all get drunk, and go to heaven!

Stephen Drew rejected his qualifying offer, and is still

unemployed as a result. The move backfired on him, and he will get nowhere near $14.1 million.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It is a 1-yr. deal. I should mention in Santana's favor...

Mar 12, 2014, 7:56 AM

He has proved durable and dependable. He has averaged 210 IP over the last four years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He needs to change his evil ways, I think.***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The deal is for $14.1 million.***

Mar 12, 2014, 8:49 AM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Only J. Upton ($14.25 mil) will be paid more in 2014.***

Mar 12, 2014, 8:50 AM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Holy smokes, that seems like an awful lot for somebody

Mar 12, 2014, 9:04 AM [ in reply to The deal is for $14.1 million.*** ]

only trusted for one year.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's higher because it's a one year deal.

Mar 12, 2014, 9:31 AM

They could have gotten him for 3/24, probably, but only wanted him for one year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That works out. If he struggles, the team isn't strapped

Mar 12, 2014, 9:37 AM

for a couple of more years. I think the White Sox took a look at him, but a fly ball pitcher in that park isn't wise.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Something to like about this deal:

Mar 12, 2014, 8:59 AM

By taking a one-year deal, Santana is taking on risk. He is going to need to pitch well to get the multi-year deal he probably really wanted. Should be motivated.

Also, you should be encouraged at the fact that the higher-ups signed off on this deal, showing that they are willing to be flexible on payroll, if needed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Will the Braves get a first round pick next year

Mar 12, 2014, 9:05 AM

if he pitches about the same as last year and they also offer him a one-year qualifying offer and he declines and signs elsewhere?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Absolutely.***
