It was, by rule, targeting
Nov 3, 2018, 1:17 PM
|
|
But it's one of those where he didn't lead with his helmet.
But the Lou player is by rule defenseless and any forcible helmet to helmet contact is gonna be a flag.
But it wasn't the normal launching/spearing style hit.

Exactly. The intent of the rule is for the player to keep his eyes up and not lower his helmet which AJ did. But any helmet to helmet will be called because Interpretation of the rule has changed.

But it looked like he turned his head specifically so he wouldn't be leading with it...
Kinda hard to know where the other player's head is going to be when you're turning your head and they are moving the entire time as well.
Don't think it was intentional.

That is why they wear helmets isn't it, bc they may hit helmet to helmet in cases where there is a tackle being made in actual tackle FB. Targeting is when you lead with the helmet, and in no part of the replay did it show where AJ led with his helmet!!! He led with a shoulder and naturally the head will follow the shoulders, and that is exactly what happen, there was no intention for the two head to meet up in the crash.
The targeting rule was so open ended when it was made that, no ref has a clue of what actual targeting really is. They are so confused with the rule, that if two heads happen to hit, they automatically assuming that it meets what Targeting truly is, but most of these targeting calls are total bull sh!t!!!

Under the new rules that fact is not relevant. It is all about helmet to helmet contact. The rule is too broad and refs are told to flag everything.

The booth will always lean toward the call on the field. When you flag everything on the field. An inordinate amount of bad calls will stand.

Targeting is

leading with the crown of the helmet. If he's leading with the shoulder, how is that targeting? You can't be targeting.

I think the only problem there is that it is extremely difficult to slow down enough to wrap up when you are running that fast at somebody before they can juke you and take off.

Break his legs lol. He should have got lower but who knows if the returner would have went lower. You just have to not tackle him hard on a punt return I guess.

The slower replay shows the returner leading with his helmet into Terrell. The targeting rule is majorly flawed and sucks. Need to rewrite it.

There was helmet contact, but he was clearly trying to avoid forceful impact by turning his head.
What’s a player supposed to do?

But he lowered his head and 3 did not just turned to the side.
There needs to be a change in the rule then.

These dumb A$S announcers say that it wasn't an intentional targeting hit, but he must learn not to make un-intentional hits, where do ESECPN get these bright people from???
