Is there no end to the laziness or downright deception in

the media these days? Daily, you see things like:

Claim: (Video) Maui was hit by energy directed weapons, sparking wildfires.
Fact Check: Video actually shows Louisiana electrical explosions, not Maui wildfires.

Claim: A photo shows the aftermath of recent fires in Maui. It claims the fires were selective because the trees survived while the houses burned down.
Fact Check: Photo actually shows a neighborhood in San Diego following a wildfire in 2003.

So, not only does the media now lie to us, they don't even take the time to get actual pictures of whatever it is they want to lie about.

Hate to say it, but the media has been lying to us all since 1960s, and maybe before that.

The media is NOT a pubic service. It's a business. The goal of any successful business is to MAKE MONEY. There are two ways the media makes money today:

1. Ad revenue generated from leveraging their large amount of watchers, subscribers, and clickers.

2. Kickbacks from tailored messaging, specifically from other companies or our politicians (via the parties).

Don't be mad when you're tricked into staying tuned in (#1) or when you're fed the wrong message on purpose (#2).

The only way to correct this is to stop tuning in.

Depends on your definition of “media” and where you go to consume your “media”.

If you are talking about factual news gathering - then I know of no reputable ‘news’ organizations that reported either of those Maui claims.

I don’t frequent sites/sources that specialize in conspiracy theories. I did see those Maui claims - but that was on the Politics board and put forth by the usual Q crowd folk over there…

Guess you need to take it with a grade of slaw in the future and look to see the original source in the feed.

But then again , that “original” source is probably referencing a random tweet. And if you go to the original tweet it is probably referencing another source that was referencing another obscure tweet with no sourcing.

So yeah - it does suck these days. Also, in another related item - I never get my news from Facebook. Seems like a good number of people do these days - at least many that I know. Now THAT scares me.

I was trying to find out just what exactly is happening over there. I found an article, that detailed the speculation, conjecture, half truths, and down right lies being sold to the world as absolute truth. Every item was either confirmed, or proven untrue, by a fact checker from Australia, (I think). The list of items was a lengthy one, and most of the items were falsehoods. Videos were included, and it was found some of them were almost twenty years old, and some of them were even taken, from video games. The article named the sources of the items, but most I have never heard of, but supposedly reputable news services are reporting this stuff, without doing any kind of homework. CNN was guilty of several of them. I came away with the conclusion, that no one knows whats happening over there, except those that are actually living it, and news services are like politicians. I don't trust any of them.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But you trust this fact checker from (you think) Australia?

The fact of the matter is that if someone is looking for news that supports the believes they already possess, it’s not hard to find a channel or site that will corroborate your opinions. That’s why these cable news networks are so popular.

sources for his findings, that looked pretty easy to confirm. I guess I could have fact checked the fact checker, but the list of items was a long one. And where did I say; I trusted him? If you read the last sentence in my post, I said; I don't trust any of them, the media, that is. I would include fact checkers in that grouping, but he did seem some what credible with his info, and he seemed to be impartial in his writing, so I would think he wasn't looking for anyone to corroborate an opinion of his, and I wasn't looking for opinions. I was hoping for information, and all I could come up with is; it's hard to tell who to trust, and not to trust. Cable news networks may be popular, but I don't watch any of them. I read MSNBC, and Fox, and try to get some kind of idea as to what's happening in the world, but I take both with the proverbial grain of salt. So there ya go.

Your description of what you came across on Google News made me interested as I hadn't heard of any of the falsehoods you listed. Went to Google News, for the first time ever, didn't realize there was such a thing. It appeared to be a selection of lots of news outlets Fox News, CNN, Wall Street Journal, ESPN, ABC News, etc. What I did find interesting though was at the bottom as I scrolled was every topic you listed and a fact check of each one with links, everyone of them being tagged as false. I wonder why your feed was so different than mine? Regardless, it was an interesting exercise.

Yes I know that, I was gently implying that. The fact is, whatever search engine you use will data mine what you have already searched and to a large degree provide support materials to what you ALREADY believe in. Also known as a self fulfilling prophecy. I would argue that search engines that target previous searches and then direct the user, might be a bigger issue than what or how the media reports. If you are consistently bombarded with a similar narrative then it becomes very difficult to acknowledge or generate differing views.

After the 2020 election I stopped consuming all main stream media. Between that, and the abysmal COVID reporting I knew it was complete nonsense. Narratives, opinions, and half truths are not facts. Mainstream media isn't in the business of reporting facts. Americans who believe the news is "news" are dangerous idiots IMOP. The worst part is, they actually believe they're well informed.

MSM outlets can't help themselves, it's who they are.

I turned off cable news several years ago and my life improved as a result. I have retired friends/family who watch CNN or Fox much of the day. They get all worked up about an issue based on the network feeding their ideology which is the goal of the network.

I would like to see somebody give a go at a "politically middle" news channel, but I guess the experts have determined there is no such thing, or if there is, there's no money in it.

Well I have learned that if you oppose the Libs you are part of the “Q”, whatever the hell that is, or believe in conspiracy theories which in my thought process is their opinion. Do libs not have opinions? Should they also be classified a conspiracy theories? People start up with “Q” or conspiracies like it’s some sort of devil worshipping I tune out. Divided country in big part because of social media and the news media and it’s only getting worse. Politicians are crooks bought and paid for and that goes for both sides.

Not sure there is such as thing as a "politically middle" news channel.

That's the rub. Fact-based news can't be political. Journalism isn't political. But, in our country we have neither, because the MSM is corrupt. The moment you interject politics into news it's not factual.

The MSM news-cycle in America is so slanted to the LEFT that they've convinced 50% of the country that you are "extremist" if you believe in Constitutional protections such as ….The 1st Amendment, The 2cnd Amendment, etc...

The media considers you an "extremist" if you're not a left-leaning Marxist, or at least a socialist sympathizer.

A NEUTRAL news channel would make NewsMax look like MSNBC/Rachel Maddow. That's how FAR left the MSM is in 2023.

Far too many times I'll read an article that references a scientific study or survey. When I look up the original source, it doesn't say what the article claims. Also, a lot of the time if you check the writers math, it doesn't add up.

Even the UPI and API have started adding editorial content to news stories. Worse, they put the editorial at the beginning of the article. Give me the facts and let me make up my own mind.

Sadly even the 'fact checkers' at times base their facts on opinion.

It gets annoying that people are sheep and believe everything they see and hear from media. I do not care if you believe differently than me, but at least research what is being told and form an opinion. Of all courses taken in college, logic was the one that made me think the most. What and who is to gain? What is the full context of the conversation? Just opened my mind to question things and not just accept them

As bad as the news content is, online media apparently doesn’t even run spellcheck or check their grammar in a lot of cases. In some cases it looks like the news outlets are hiring 9th graders to write their articles.
