Is the idea to penalize Sammy OR the team??

Jun 28, 2012, 11:12 AM

Clearly there needs to be a punishment for Sammy Watkins and it needs to be punitive so I can't imagine it not involving some loss of playing time. By losing time on the field it truly impacts the offender, in this case Sammy. He loses the opportunity to showcase his skills and improve his stats, as an individual. I guess my only question is does the team need to be punished? If the answer is no then I don't see why you could not argue that holding Sammy out of the Auburn game is not the proper thing to do. Just a thought.

The team is responsible for every member of the team. I am sure other players were involved with Sammy's incident and partake in the same behavior. That means they are also responsible. Also you have to send a message to the team that this behavior is not okay. That is the only reason I am against suspending him for games 2 and 3 instead of Auburn. As a coach that sends a message that the player is more important than the team and shows the other players that they will still get to play in big games no matter how they act.

Jun 28, 2012, 11:29 AM

Interesting. Don't like generalizations and assumptions as you made in sentence 2 but can't disagree with need to send a message to the rest of the team. Is this just a case of poor timing on Sammy's part? If this happened the night after the Auburn game would it be ok to sit him for the next one vs Ball St and leave it at that?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that's a silly question

Jun 29, 2012, 11:13 AM

maybe sammy had some on him the week before the acccg last year, and just didn't get caught. much better to get caught now than then, i think that's obvious. of course it's bad timing, but the offseason is very long, and a lot can happen.

Have you ever played a team sport before?

Jun 28, 2012, 11:16 AM

Accountability is a huge part of being a team. If you miss a play on the field the whole team is punished, its the same if you make a bad decision off the field.

Dabo should maintain a complete black-out on everything

Jun 28, 2012, 11:21 AM

to do with any punishment he intends for Sammy as far as playing time until the day of the game(s). No need to give some DC an advantage as far as coverage schemes and match-ups; that would be detrimental to the team as a whole.

Hard work of many, sacrificed by the disrespect of the few

Jun 28, 2012, 11:21 AM

It was a selfish decision to break the law, and the punishment should result in missed playing time. It sucks that the example has to be made on Sammy's behalf, but this will also set the tone for the behavior of the rest of the team. That right there hurts Sammy more than a permanent record. Knowing that he let his teammates down.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think you make a good point - the thought generally.......

Jun 28, 2012, 11:23 AM

has been that the offender is penalized the most by taking away his playing time but it does have an effect of penalizing the team also. I guess you could make him run the stairs in DV or something like that but some people would question whether or not that's "real" punishment or just conditioning.

This makes me think - how would you penalize SW if, for example, he was a 4th string player who never got to play in games? You'd have to think of something else for him. Not let him dress out for games? Confine him to his room when not at practice or class? You couldn't take away his playing time since he never gets to play.

The coach with penalties does not hurt the team, Sammy by

Jun 28, 2012, 11:24 AM

his behavior hurt the team. Someone who goes out in a way that is a detriment to the team is, at that time, not a team player.

Sometimes it takes getting caught for that message to sink into people. No doubt that if Sammy is as good a person as everyone seems to believe, off the field issues will never happen again to him.

Jun 28, 2012, 11:27 AM

If the answer is no then I don't see why you could not argue that holding Sammy out of the Auburn game is not the proper thing to do.

Seriously though, I can't support suspending Sammy for more than one quarter based on what I've heard about him going above and beyond to make things right. Kids make mistakes--I made the exact same ones when I was in college. Nobody ever had to suspend me from anything to make me learn my lesson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Did your Peers learn for your mistakes as well?

Jun 28, 2012, 11:31 AM

Or did they go and do the same thing you got punished for the next day?

This punishment will carry over to Sammy's Teammates, Athletes on campus, Athletes at other schools, and even high school and middle schoolers that aspire to be a colligate athlete one day.

Just sayin!

If it hurts the whole team, then his teammates will help

Jun 28, 2012, 11:34 AM

make sure it doesn't happen again, supposedly.

If a guy just has to run sprints as punishment (for example), his teammates will stand around and give him good natured grief for having to run more.

If it causes them issues in a game - his teammates will pull the guy to the side and say "Hey don't let that crap happen again...."

He is wise enough to know that offender go to jail regardless of the repercussion to their responsibilities to others. This is a teachable moment in the lives of each of our football players. No one is above the law.

Dabo is not a fool when it comes to matters of growing boys into men.

That being said it would delight me to see Sammy catch 12 passes for 175 yds against auburn and return two for touchdowns on punt returns.

The culprit confessed while we were in the G's. He didn't confess because he was going to get spanked too, but because his actions were having an effect on everyone else.

I'd imagine the thought of letting your team down is a fairly strong deterrent, both in the first grade class room and in team sports.
