Is it fair that the pope recruits for Notre Dame?

8

Apr 19, 2023, 6:41 AM

It’s well known in recruiting circles that Notre Dame will lean on the pope to make some phone calls to elite players and their families from Catholic schools. Pope John Paul II being such a good recruiter played a big part in them winning a national championship in the late 80’s.

If you look in the database, Clemson doesn’t offer too many kids from Catholic high schools. I think they know the deck is stacked against them. Fortunately, the last couple of popes haven’t been good closers. Regardless, I don’t think it’s fair and the NCAA should kick the tires on that issue.

I'm not sure that's a selling point....

...anymore (if it ever was).

The the Pope has always been highly polarizing to most Christians, and today that includes Catholics.

they can use the Pope's NIL. Very inequitable. Got to stop.

I did not know that this was well known.

Does the Pope make calls on behalf of BC as well?

What about hoops teams from predominantly Catholic schools?

The part about the pope making calls is well known. I recently heard that Lou Holtz used to take the pope golfing to provide updates on the recruiting class, but I think that’s more urban legend than anything else.

Nothing is “fair”. We strive to make it so, but “fair” happens unnaturally.

Well, you did not expect him to recruit for BYU.

When told by his child, 'It's not fair" most parents are told the best response is, "Life's not fair."

My dad was even better than that. When I would say, "But, it's not fair!" He would respond, "So." No matter what I said after that, he would respond, "So."

Pretty soon, the discussion was over. How do you argue with "So"?

Who needs the Pope when you have Banks Pope on your team making plays.

Do we know if Dabo is one of those Protestants who thinks that Catholics aren’t Christians?

1

Apr 19, 2023, 4:06 PM

If so, that would explain us not recruiting as many players from Catholic high schools.

(Said only half jokingly.)

I’ve always thought the Pope influenced referees in NotreoverratedDames games. Too many call went their way. Haha.
