Interesting read on the state of CFB

Check out this article from USA TODAY:

Underneath Playoff glitz, a warning: College football could be headed into a ditch

Interesting yes, but this is an economical argument.

If they continue to make money it will continue as is. If revenue goes down, salaries will as well. Worst thing you can do is go in and start making caps etc. and artificially control these things. Money talks and not making money will drive change. The only interesting argument to me is the pay of players. I don’t like it and think it will hurt the sport. On the other hand coaches and athletic programs getting fatter and fatter while some players get injured and or never go pro.

One point he left out...

The article was well written and does a good job of pointing to a future where there will be a reckoning. But, I think it didn't go far enough.

His basic argument is this: College Football is generating a ton of money for everybody but the players. Therefore, pay the players. That is a complex problem. Who gets paid? Only starters? Only the football team? All NCAA athletes regardless of their sport's revenue? And who pays the players at schools that don't generate enough revenue to pay the players themselves?

But, my solution is simpler. Allow all NCAA athletes to turn pro out of high school or any year thereafter. For some kids, this will be a good deal. Others will prefer to mature more in college on a free ride. But, either way, if they want to be paid as professionals and forfeit their amateur status, then they have an immediate avenue to do so. But, once paid, they'll never be amateurs again.

Concerning turning pro. The colleges have no control over when a player turns pro. That is entirely determined by the professional leagues, not the colleges or the NCAA.

I agree with that. Need to take Prof. Ath out of College

Allowing 18 or 19 year old to turn pro will force professional sports to create minor leagues (or developmental leagues), like baseball does. That's what the NFL and NBA need - minor leagues. It is time for colleges to populate football and basketball teams with true Student Athletes, just like college baseball.

That may be the future of college football and basketball. I hope it is.

Something for the long term and not the quick payout. Good life lesson. They're getting the best life many of them will ever have being a college student. They want for very little. A small stipend to go on a date etc.is fine but handing out large sums while a student is recipe for mischief. IMO...cents you didn't axe.

Attended the 100th Clemson vs. USC game on a broken ankle from 8 hours earlier. Got a recliner in the endzone for the 100th game...it was worth it. Story in Profile.

Exactly. Seems like the writer said a whole lot of nothing

People should continue to write articles about the gobs of money schools like LSU and TAMU are throwing down the drain paying coaches not to coach at their schools anymore, the stories are crazy.
