The throat slash is something the NCAA has ruled unacceptable and normally it would be flagged. It is equivalent to the difference in celebrating and taunting.

The ones who think Dabo should have not issued some kind of punishment just because it wasn't caught should go pull for Spurless and the limpcocks. Remember a "Clemson Gentleman needs no introduction". This is on or off the field.

money sign = legal and no penalty throat slash = illegal and 15 yard penalty
I'm not sure where all the confusion is coming from.

???
are our guys going to miss playing time when there's a late hit out of bounds penalty?
chop block???
etc...
is this just a throat slash penalty or the fact that it's a "personal foul" penalty?

The throat slash is considered a taunt but beyond that, it's classless thugery. Hitting someone out of bounds in generally a judgement call. If a guy did it purposely to try and hurt someone my guess is he'd be suspended. There is a difference and it's pretty easy to see.

anyone. But that particular gesture is against the rules and had he been spotted by an official, he'd have garnered a penalty that would have affected the ENTIRE TEAM.
Much more importantly, I expect Martavis and every Clemson student-athlete to represent OUR university on and off the field in an upstanding manner---one that befits the institution and the thousands of alumni who've gone before. Coach Swinney agrees with the vast majority of Clemson fans that Martavis has earned some type of penalty because of his behavior---whether it was flagged by the officials or not. I don't think Bryant's actions warrant a serious suspension (such as Isaiah Battle's deserve), but he does need to pay a price for his poor behavior and be reminded of who he is and who he represents. Hopefully, after he scores many more TD's the rest of the season, Martavis will simply toss the ball to the closest official and head for the sidelines to celebrate with his teammates and all the fans.

I was responding to the use of the word "Thuggery" when describing Bryant's actions. It is my belief that the word has been misused in this instance, and therefore I expressed my opinion regarding the matter.

My impression was that Dabo is requiring our guys to follow the rules for the sake of being the best team Clemson can be. Getting 15 yards tacked onto a play against us is contrary to that position.
Another noteworthy impression is that coaches and player don't make the rules, they either follow them or pay the penalty.
Actually, that's the only correct position to take from any perspective of this subject.

is it b/c it was a "throat slash"
or b/c it was/shoulda been a "personal foul"?????
I'm mean a late hit out of bounds can be perceived as classless and can be missed by the refs..........are our players going to sit out after the coaches go back and review penalties/shoulda been penalties every game????

difference between personal foul and unsportsmanlike
Sep 24, 2013, 1:48 PM
|
|
A personal foul such as a late hit is 15 yards.
An unsportsmanlike penalty such as taunting has the same number of yards but if a single player receives 2 unsportsmanlike penalties he is ejected from the game. This makes it a more serious offense and one that the coaches can't take lightly.

the punishment doesn't fit the "crime"
tripling his running at practice woulda been just as/more effective than missing playing time
and like i said in an earlier post people on here would be singing a much different tune if we were playing FSU this weekend.

Dabo said less playing time. He didn't say a series, quarter, or a half. Maybe he will just not get the "start".

Since Johnny Heisman probably started the money-sign gesture, it's probably okay with the NCAA and is not considered taunting, since only the opponents would consider it to be taunting. I get it now. The NCAA is still stupid.
Ask yourself - would either the throat slash or money gesture tick you off, or BOTH?

Incidentally, a coot CB/LB was observed doing the same thing during their game against unc and received no penalty nor served any team punishment.
