Duke will prob go on to lose 4-5 games which will really be

the thorn in our side even if we do start figuring out how to score from the 1 yard line. Had we done the little things the score would've been 24 to 14 in the 4th qtr. and thats with leaving the blocked FG. Comedy of errors did us in. I was joking about Clemson fumbling on the goalline right before Mafah fumbled. i'm like did we get paid off to play this bad.

Clemson will lose 4-5 games too. If not more.***

i'm thinking 9-3 is how we'll finish. FSU, ND, Duke***

Even that seems unlikely given the level of play last night

Beating either FSU or ND right now would require a big upset. Then we still have UNC, SCar, NC State, etc. And we're still going to get the best shot from the little guys like Cuse because they still see us as the Clemson program that made 6 straight CFPs. It's like FSU in the early 2000s. They were still everyone's biggest game for 4 or 5 years even when they were losing 4 games per season and very clearly in decline.

This team isn't currently good enough to survive everyone's best shot without tripping up somewhere. If we don't manage to somehow beat FSU or ND, I think we are looking at 8-4 or worse. It's a very scary thought.

Cuse plays Clemson hard. They will beat us.***

if you're assuming the effort & the play is as bad as last

night for every game then yes you would be correct. I can't imagine we do that every game. If we punch it in 2 of the 3 goalline opportunities we're up 21-13 midway through the 4th. IT was just a comedy of errors and unbelievable turnovers. Thats why we lost. Will we be that inept all year? In the ACC? We're now the hunters and not the hunted. Hopefully we'll play looser.

I never imagined losing to Duke either...

Turnovers aside, Duke still averaged more yards per play

Sep 5, 2023, 10:14 AM [ in reply to if you're assuming the effort & the play is as bad as last ]

than we did. They averaged more yards per rush and per pass than we did. That's not really the sign of a game where one team was clearly better but continually shot itself in the foot and lost. We did shoot ourselves in the foot alot, but that led to a 21 pt loss. The scary fact is that, had we played a relatively clean game, we still would've been in a dog fight with Duke. If that makes you feel any better, you're probably ignoring the implications.

4 years ago we could've turned the ball over 3x in the red zone and still beaten Duke by multiple scores. Everyone here would've been bitching about how sloppy we were, but we wouldn't be talking about losing to Duke by 3 TDs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that same box score you're looking at also says we outrushed

Sep 5, 2023, 10:45 AM

and out passed Duke. you're also counting two plays late by Duke in garbage time after the game was sealed up. Listen, we played bad. But even playing rough we still moved the ball passing and running. We just didn't finish any of it off and in mind-numbing fashion. If anything its that that i'm most worried about. Panicking in easy scoring situations. 15 yard FGs.... ball on the 1 yardline. Outthinking ourselves with mesh plays at the goalline. Those are play calls. Being cute on obvious short yardage plays has never appealed to me. i'm better with i formation with a lead blocker with an option for play action pass to one of our tight ends. Drop the mesh, read crap at the goalline. All it does if give the defense a chance.

Sorry for the rant there but all in all we're a decent team. We don't have any elite playmakers on offense anymore. And we're going to have to dumb down the playcalls and adjust b/c of that fact. No more Etienne busting a 50 yard run to beat BC at home in a game we should've lost too. Do more Deshaun watson willing his team to victory late even if they're playing flat. All that is non-existent on this team. We have to gut out some victories.

Playcalling can be updated. But kicking and WR cannot. Thats our biggest challenge this year until somebody steps up.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We outrushed and outpassed them because we ran more plays

Sep 5, 2023, 12:10 PM

Sometimes qualify > quantity. We had like 500 yards of offense against Tennessee, but we ran 100 plays. 500 yards on 50 plays would be much, much better than 500 yards on 100 plays. Having low yards per play generally means a lack of explosiveness in the offense and often leads to things like drives stalling out and red zone struggles - both of which we have witnessed recently.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson was 6th in red zone scoring in 2022 and it was...

Sep 5, 2023, 12:21 PM

far from explosive.

https://www.teamrankings.com/college-football/stat/red-zone-scoring-pct?date=2023-01-10

That's an entire season at 76.4 plays per game. The staff/team did a really nice job of finishing opportunities, last night not so much.

Miami isn't going to just roll over either...

Youre forgetting trips to NCSU & Louisville

…AND Miami.

This may be the year Louisville finally gets it’s FIRST WIN against the Tigers.

I say 6-6. Add SC, NC and Miami. That's a real possibility unless some major improvements.

I think Duke will finish better than that. They will be undefeated going in to the ND game.

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

yeah but nobody in this conference over the past 15 years

finishes out anything. Play great one week adn lay an egg the next. And we're like how did they play us so well.

I think they have a coach who will keep them focused and grounded. I don't know how well they will do but they will be disciplined and hungry, something we were when we first started to climb the mountain for the first time many moons ago.
