I wish that the ACC divisions would be abolished.

Oct 27, 2014, 12:25 PM

It's stupid to have a conference record of 5-3 and face a 8-0 conference in the championship.

Um. You do that by having teams that matter. VT, Miami, GT, BC - teams need to step up and be relevant again.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, I can think of one big showdown,

Doesn't the big ten do that? I mean I would like to get another shot at FSU in a neutral site. In the long term look at the two best conference records both this teams need to be in a championship even if they already played.

Oct 27, 2014, 12:37 PM [ in reply to Re: I wish that the ACC divisions would be abolished. ]

No they are East/West now, the ACC should just move to a North/South divisons. No one outside of the ACC has any clue who is in what divison.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's not the ACC's fault

Oct 27, 2014, 1:00 PM [ in reply to Re: I wish that the ACC divisions would be abolished. ]

They are actually one of the conferences lobbying for what you are suggesting. However currently if you don't have divisions you cannot have a title game per NCAA rules so there's nothing the ACC can do about it.

Re: I wish that the ACC divisions would be abolished.

Oct 27, 2014, 12:34 PM

I dont. What happens when we lose 1 game to a very good team one year and 2 teams go undefeated yet play cream puffs? I don't like the unbalanced nature of the division - less schedule

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can I have an example of that scenario?

Oct 27, 2014, 12:37 PM

I'm thinking that the divisions would remain, just the logic for determining the two teams to play in the ACCCCG/

Re: Can I have an example of that scenario?

Oct 27, 2014, 12:41 PM

If you are gonna use divisions, then you have to be willing to accept division winners. Changing the teams within divisions a possibility, but in no way can you let 2 teams from same division play for championship. That's as asinine as having 2 SECW teams play for a NC......oh wait

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

People seem to forget that the roles were reversed years ago

Oct 27, 2014, 12:35 PM

The acc may change the championship system but to get mad about it is stupid. There were years where the coastal was much stronger than the Atlantic and us or fsu benefited from that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The championship game requires two divisions.

Oct 27, 2014, 12:37 PM

I don't think the ACC is getting rid of their championship game, nor should they.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think the OP was suggesting that.***

Abolishing the divisions would mean abolishing

Oct 27, 2014, 12:39 PM

the championship game. There wouldn't be a point for the game without divisions. The top team would just be the champion, as it is in the Big 12. Every other major conference has gone to divisions so they can have a championship game, which is a boon to the conference.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I guess you aware that this could be changing?

Oct 27, 2014, 12:50 PM [ in reply to I guess you aware that this could be changing? ]

And that article doesn't even say that it's likely. Of course the ACC and Big 12 support it. But would the SEC and PAC-12? Probably not.

Re-Alignment

Oct 27, 2014, 12:41 PM

The current divisional alignment resemble two different conferences who's champions meet in Charlotte for the ACC-CG.

Here is an idea for a better ACC.

Divide into 3 groups of natural rivalries. You play an annual game against everyone in your group yearly. You play everyone else in the ACC every other year.

Group 1:
UNC, NCST, Wake, Duke

Group 2:
Syracuse, BC, UVA, VA Tech

Group 3A:
Clemson, Georgia Tech, L-Ville

Group 3B:
FSU, Miami, Pitt

Atlantic Division in even years (2016, 2018, 2020, etc). Cross Divisional games shown in parenthesis.

UNC (play 2 Syracuse, BC, UVA, VA Tech)
NCST (play 2 Syracuse, BC, UVA, VA Tech)
Wake (play 2 Syracuse, BC, UVA, VA Tech)
Duke (play 2 Syracuse, BC, UVA, VA Tech)
Clemson (play 2 FSU, Miami, Pitt)
Georgia Tech (play 2 FSU, Miami, Pitt)
L-Ville (play 2 FSU, Miami, Pitt)

Coastal Division in even years (2016, 2018, 2020, etc). Cross Divisional games shown in parenthesis.

Syracuse (play 2 UNC, NCST, Wake, Duke)
BC (play 2 UNC, NCST, Wake, Duke)
UVA (play 2 UNC, NCST, Wake, Duke)
VA Tech (play 2 UNC, NCST, Wake, Duke)
FSU (play 2 Clemson, Georgia Tech, L-Ville)
Miami (play 2 Clemson, Georgia Tech, L-Ville)
Pitt (play 2 Clemson, Georgia Tech, L-Ville)

Atlantic Division in odd years (2017, 2019, 2021, etc).

UNC (play 2 Syracuse, BC, UVA, VA Tech)
NCST (play 2 Syracuse, BC, UVA, VA Tech)
Wake (play 2 Syracuse, BC, UVA, VA Tech)
Duke (play 2 Syracuse, BC, UVA, VA Tech)
FSU (play 2 Clemson, Georgia Tech, L-Ville)
Miami (play 2 Clemson, Georgia Tech, L-Ville)
Pitt (play 2 Clemson, Georgia Tech, L-Ville)

Coastal Division in odd years (2017, 2017, 2021, etc).

Syracuse (play 2 UNC, NCST, Wake, Duke)
BC (play 2 UNC, NCST, Wake, Duke)
UVA (play 2 UNC, NCST, Wake, Duke)
VA Tech (play 2 UNC, NCST, Wake, Duke)
Clemson (play 2 FSU, Miami, Pitt)
Georgia Tech (play 2 FSU, Miami, Pitt)
L-Ville (play 2 FSU, Miami, Pitt)
