Great player, but one of the last Clemson receivers to catch most of the balls thrown to him in his body. Cost us the game when he drop a pass right in his "hands" against BC for the division championship when Ryan was the QB for them. He had a step or two on the defender down the sidelines. It was after that we started recruiting receivers that caught the ball with the hands.

I was on the hill as a freshman for that. The place just died and it's the only memory that sticks around from that year.

Kelly was the reason I fell in love with Clemson

I was a fan when I was young and went to games. But I really started being a diehard fan after I rushed the field and Kelly gave me one of his signed gloves after a big win.

Yep. Big AKelly fan. Hard to believe it was that long ago. Also, watching those videos made me remember how bad I hated Maryland being in the ACC.

Nice player, but hardly a legend. We just didn’t have much else back then. he’d never see the field today. I was 10 rows back sitting at the goal line when he dropped that pass vs BC, bounced right off his palms. I wanted to choke Bowden for playing ‘ not to lose’ that game. At least he hired Dabo...

When he left Clemson, Kelly was #1 in the record books in:
Aug 23, 2019, 12:01 PM
|
|
- Career Receptions - Career Receiving Yards - Career Receiving TDs - Single-Season Receptions - Single Season Receiving TDs
And 2nd in Single-Season Receiving Yards (3 yards behind Rod Gardner)
He's still top 5 in most of those categories even with all the great WRs who've come through the last 10 years.
Definitely underrated!

really liked AK and Cullen but his senior year vs BC he got hit in the numbers for a bomb TD that would have sent us to the ACCCG but dropped it and Matt Ryan went on to win. That loss really disturbs me to this days

I was at the game; the catch wasn't "in the numbers"

While it was catchable, he almost had to lay out for it. A little while after that, AK caught a 4th and 10 pass to keep the drive alive. Then on 3rd down at the 30, Harper got sacked for a 7 yard loss and Buchholz had to try the 54 yard FG instead of a more makeable 47 yarder.
And if we had won the game, not sure if Terry Don would have replaced Tommy with Dabo the following year after playing in the ACCCG and maybe winning it.

EXACTLY. Everything happens for a reason. It's like the butterfly effect. You gotta figure, if scar and acc teams knew in 2007 what was going to become of clemson, they probably roll over for Tommy Bowden in hopes that we never make it to the big time.

drop against BC, but that was not an easy catch. He probably should've caught it, but it was like a 40-50 yard throw that he had to half dive for and couldn't catch in stride.

It would have been another “The Catch” !
He’d have joined Jerry Butler and Rod Gardner in Tiger lore.

Agreed.
Side note: I view the class following Rod as where WRU actually begins it's roots. It did not flourish under Tommy, thanks to that BubbleScreenU period but Dabo got things back on track and rolling by keeping Nuk home, then that following class is where everyone points.

Did you notice after the TD against Wake, Hunter was the 1st to congratulate him? Like everyone else, gonna miss Hunter this season but glad he finally got enough credits to graduate.
