A team the edge of getting in the tourney, doesn't get blown out on prime TV by 20 points and still get invited.

I’m going to put Clemson on my bracket anyway. I’ll just put them wherever NC State is. Clemson deserves it, and my bracket gets busted the first day anyway.

I am also pencilling Clemson “in”.

I am almost purely a numbers guy … and I say Clemson has the numbers … more specifically, only ten losses.

If every team with 9 or fewer losses is in, the tournament will have 54 teams. This means there is room for 14 with ten or more losses. (Actually the number will exceed 54 but I don’t, for example, expect two Ivy League teams).

Realistically any team with lots of losses doesn’t DESERVE an invitation … winning it all is remote for any/all who are that familiar with losing. BUT … the tournament will tip off with 68 teams, so …

Baylor will be in because they won it all recently
Providence will be in because they finished ahead of Connecticut (who is in)
Indiana and Northwestern are in due to Big Tendonitis
Southern Cal will be in because they are Southern Cal
Kentucky will be in because they are adequate and have history
Tennessee will be in because they/Barnes have a way with good press

So that is seven more, or 61 total.

Can Clemson be one of those seven? Sure can … I am pencilling the Tigers in.

Sure, but you are not accepting the fact that it isn't done that way. A win is just not a win. And a loss is just not a loss. If it was, sure you would be correct. But the fact is, it isn't.
