looke pretty sparse over on the far side of the rug yet a good crowd overall. why was that so empty

They have that side of the hill entrance blocked off.

It's difficult to get to that side because the student entrance is gate 1.

You don't have to use gate 1 though, unfortunately most students don't realize this and there is a huge jam about 15-20 minutes before the game.

The first game they didn't even have all the gates open at gate 1 15 minutes before the game. Since then I've just used gate 13, which has been much easier.

tickets this year. For the ND game my daughter was able to get an upper deck student ticket while it showed the Hill (general admission) as being sold out. It seems that they are limiting the number of Hill tickets. Also if you get guest tickets you have to be in the upper deck with your guest. Pretty sure those used to be general admission also.

You're probably talking about the side closest to the band. That corner usually looks empty because (with good reason), people don't want to get their ears blasted by the band that close for three and a half hours.
