North Korea

Apr 3, 2013, 4:57 PM

How seriously do most of you take the recent threats of the new regime in N. Korea?

Not very much because IMO they are just..............

Apr 3, 2013, 5:36 PM

a lot of mouth and BS.

If Kim Jong Eun does something stupid then we can wipe NK off the face of the earth. Not without some collateral damage of course.

I don't think he's that stupid. IMO our worry is Iran and of course NK helping them to achieve the bomb.

Iran/NK are similar in that the problem is w/their leaders..

Apr 3, 2013, 5:48 PM

not the people in the country. In Iran's case, I think there is a strong argument to let things play out because the youth in that country are decidedly against the leadership and pro-West. We need to use that to our advantage.

I agree with you about NK and that it's BS. It's just Kim Jong-Un saber rattling to assert his power within his country. The only real threat is that in his pushing things to the very edge, that he mistakenly falls over that edge.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Both are a slippery slope. Kim whatever is just...........

Apr 3, 2013, 6:14 PM

BS. But he could do something stupid to cause a major cluster###.

As for Iran yes the youth seem to be pro western. But the people in power believe in the 12th Imam doctrine. Twelvers want the Mahdi to return and also believe Israel needs to be wiped off the map for that to happen.

Iran doesn't need the bomb IMO! It's a Catch-22, if they get it and go after Israel then all #### breaks loose. If Israel attacks to prevent it...all #### breaks loose.

It's really a no win situation.

It's a tough situation in Iran, no doubt.

Apr 3, 2013, 6:56 PM

and for the reasons you said.

I think the desire to stay in power by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei drives them more than any religious desire. They know that if they do anything to Israel they will be wiped off the planet too. The people of Iran know this as well which is why Iran's leadership is weary of saber rattling like NK. They fear internal upheaval almost as much as being bombed.

If they believed in the religious destruction of Israel to the degree many think, then I think they would have acted already with the belief that America and Israel would be no match for God. Because they haven't done this makes me think they use that rhetoric to maintain their power and influence in the country. (Yet another reason not to have a theocracy)

Now, the problem will be is if there is a uprising or the Ayatollah starts getting desperate to hold power, they might act rash and if they have a nuclear bomb would use it out of that desperation. That's a legit fear and a true Catch-22.

Re: North Korea

Apr 3, 2013, 6:32 PM

I think Kim Jong Un is just doing a lot of posturing because it is the time of year they typically experience famines. If they actually attack S. Korea, he will be even dumber than I think he is, and I think he is pretty dumb. If he is rational, and who knows, maybe he isn't, he will just use this saber rattling to try and get more foreign aid at some point.

I think China invades, mark this post

Apr 3, 2013, 7:35 PM

-China is an emerging power looking to flex their muscles, and maybe getting in some live fire training for their military. The US has had plenty of hot wars recently, China hasn't had much other than glorified police actions.

-China borders NK so logistically it is easy

-China can flex their muscle on the global stage and probably avoid any problems on the global stage, its a savvy move. They can send a signal to the world without consequence.

-China has been building up military on the border the past several days, and this activity is not slowing. It is actually picking up. For defensive reasons? Really? NK would invade China? LOL.

South Korea is a big business competitor of China

Apr 3, 2013, 9:22 PM [ in reply to Re: I think China invades, mark this post ]

LG, Hyundai, Kia, Samsung among others.

All wars are about MONEY. This one is no different.

China wants more access to western markets. South Korea has inroads to those markets.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I could see that happening, but...

Apr 3, 2013, 9:28 PM [ in reply to I think China invades, mark this post ]

would NK fight back? They are allies, and China supplies most of their food/weapons/equipment so China would just have to stop supplying NK and they win that war. Not much of a fight to show anything to the rest of the world.

China's weapon against the west will be economic, not military. That's their only way of ever getting ahead of the U.S.

No China won't invade, they want to keep the status quo there like everyone else because China doesn't want to deal with the millions and millions of refugees.

Re: I could see that happening, but...

Apr 4, 2013, 8:42 AM

China has specific weapons designed to fight the US. We may be where they dump most manufactured goods, but at the same time they are investing in their military when the time comes for WWIII. Unlike us, they are expanding their military technology just in case.
They have Successfully tested missles to destroy 2 of the things we would rely on the most, Satellites, and Aircraft Carriers.

You simply can't ignore the fact that the have specific weapons to sink our carriers and knock out out satellites.
On top of that they continually hack into our computers and still our technology and anything else they need.

Many indications suggest this is a bad time to decrease military funding.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I could see that happening, but...

Apr 4, 2013, 8:59 AM

What is so different about this missile that makes it an aircraft carrier sinking missile rather then a regular missile?

Last I checked China still hasn't got a single working air craft carrier of their own.

As for the hacks, everyone sous on each other. We have caught Israel spying on us a lot and we are still on good terms. It is just a weird area of world politics.

NK is a small country and their ability to make war will last hours not days.
