Time is coming to get radical with KB

I think next Spring Dabo should approach Kelly or Kelly should approach Dabo about a position change.
It's clear he is an elite athlete but not an elite quarterback and I just don't see the amount of improvement needed to become one as a reasonable possibility. He needs to decide whether he wants one more year at QB glory or a shot at becoming a millionaire.
Patrick Sapp got three or four years in the league in the mid 90's after switching to LB and would not have seen a minute as a signal caller. I could see Kelly at a number of other positions but safety kind of jumps out at me- size and speed work and he's already trained to see the whole field.
Everybody wins- we get a jump start on the future as the winner of the TL-HJ battle this Spring could give us two more natties after a break-in year. Dabo wins because he can unload his unlikely notion that two 5* QBs are going to happily pine-ride a year and half before running the show. And Kelly wins with a chance at a big payday.
Let the hooting and name-calling begin...

I agree but me thinks Dabo will announce KB as the starter going into the Spring Game and that will continue into the fall. Expect the came coach talk. He has earned it, hasn't done anything to lose it, right now if I had to pick KB is the starter and the others are close blah blah blah.

So you saying KB will master the vertical pass
Nov 12, 2017, 9:41 PM

in ACC championship and playoffs and Clemson will win the natl championship? I like it! In that case, TL and HJ will still be much better passing QB's. But KB, with a natl championship ring, will have a leg to stand on in a QB competition against NFL QB's even if the Clemson Defense is leading the 2017 charge.

I'm simply responding to the poster who said that Dabo and the coaches would name KB starter next year because of seniority and loyalty to upper-classmen regardless of merit, and to quote the poster's most cogent argument ... "Blah, blah, blah ..."

I have to ask the question: Where do you so-called "fans" come from? You're certainly of the bandwagon variety---of that there's no doubt. Just STHU, coot.

KB has not performed well lately and is getting worse not better. Offense coaches with plays and play calling is atrocious. We have the talent but coaches aren't helping matters a bit. Dabo needs a real offensive coordinator.

Put down the crack pipe and go back to 8th grade. Kelly Bryant is 9-0 in games he’s finished/not limping around.

Sided with Cole Stoudt vs Deshaun Watson as well because that is the equivalent of wanting to go with KB of Trevor Lawrence when he gets here. Doesn't matter if we do win a Natty Championship. Currently, Kelly has less than 10 passing TD's in nearly 300 attempts. In any metric that is terrible for the position. It will just go to show our strong our actual team is if we win the Natty because like it or not, KB has been carried the whole way.

because recievers have dropped TD passes. hes completing 65% of his passes. he has done his job. play calling in the redzone has been mostly runs. He leads us downfield with a mixture of runs and passes and get in the redzone and do nothing but runs. so who cares we has less than 10 passing TDs

And the passing TD’s are low because anytime Clemson is ever anywhere close to the red zone it’s up to KB’s legs of the running backs to get it into the red zone. Rarely ever are passing plays even called. As seen by KB’s 10 rushing touchdowns.

Yes because Stoudt played the year before and was 9-1. Why did the team not carry Cooper to a W at Cuse?
Oh wait I know. It is because KB is a beast and is a big reason why we win football games. He has 10 rushing TDs, 7 passing TDs, and only 5 INTs. I could understand if he didn't have the rushing TDs but why throw it if we can run it?

Or he could play QB and be awesome next year. He's not bad now. I don't like to in any way be derogatory of Boyd, but I would take KB over Boyd any day. Boyd didn't catch half the #### KB is catching.

Not arguing for or against anyone... but Boyd didn't have a team with this depth.. at all positions.. this team just keeps getting deeper..

the rest of the year this year, and next year as well. I don’t care how great Lawrence is, Bryant will be the starter next year and he would have to regress a ton in order to lose the job. And that isn’t going to happen.

do you hate to break it to him? Also, TL may win the starting job but it won't happen like magic.
I believe with the HJ and TL recruitments our offensive philosophy may be changing. That may happen but it won't happen overnight though. As you said, KB will start the first game next season but I do not believe he will last more than a handful of games.

to not like KB, to the point that he wants to switch his position.
If Johnson were anywhere close to competing with Bryant, we wouldn’t have seen the coaches play a severely limited (hobbling) Bryant against Syracuse instead of a healthy Johnson. We also wouldn’t have seen them bring in Cooper over Johnson when Bryant was knocked out of the game.
I think Johnson has a lot of talent. Lawrence does too. But the people here who think it’s a forgone conclusion that one of them will beat out Bryant next year are a little out of touch.
Chances are that Bryant will be the starter next year, and will keep it all year. He will have to regress a lot to be overtaken.

Yep we are 9-0 when KB plays so why on earth would anybody think a true freshman would come in and take his job? It just blows my mind that people would even consider that. Change positions as well? Really? He has be poised as our leader. He does not get shaken even when things do not go our way. We do not throw the ball like we did last year so ofcourse his numbers are not going to be as good as DWs were. He runs the O that is called very well and he scores with his legs and his arm enough to win. He does not turn the ball over a lot. He fits what we are doing and it is working.

I agree with you for the most part Judge, but I don't see KB having to regress a lot to be overtaken. If the light comes on for HJ or ZC for that matter and it shows in practice they will get there chance to shine in a game. If one does then KB will get overtaken. Keep in mind I didn't start this thread and I wish the best for KB but if both backups don't see some significant playing time against the Coot Killers this weekend then Dabo is insane because they both need the live fire in case something happens to KB after this next game and we need one of them to step in if only for a quarter. I expect that to be the theme next year as well, backups seeing the field every time the game is in hand.

While I agree he'll be the starter throughout this year.. if TL comes in and is clearly the better qb.. including understanding the plays and situations.. and be able to run it as effectively as KB.., he'll start..
If not,.. he won't

We are not performing on offense like we should and KB is struggling. This is so obvious and every game is an offensive struggle too.

BTW- at no time did I say or have I said we can't win with Kelly Bryant at QB. What I said was Kelly Bryant can't win if he stays at QB. He will not become an elite passer. He is and will be a good enough passer and excellent enough runner to win at CU but he won't make a living at it at the next level.
I mentioned Sapp as an example of a successful switch- here's another of a good but not great passer/athlete/All-American who averaged over 500 yds a year rushing and lead his team to a natty- Rex Kern from Ohio State late 60's early 70's.
He was drafted in the 10th round by the Baltimore Colts as a DB and played, even started as a rookie, for a few years. But football has grown so much since then, I don't think that route is open any more. There's just too much talent at all positions for teams to undertake that transformation.
Someone in this thread mentioned Taj Boyd and he'll also serve as yet another example. He was a better passer than KB and a good runner though not in Bryant's league. He was enough better passer to get a failed shot at the next level. That was his best chance. But Bryant is much better athlete and he has choices that were not open to Boyd. I think he should take them.
