What do you think the over/under is for the amount of recruits who decommit today?
I say 4.5.

I say ZERO. PSU is still a proud program. I don't see them vacating like we expect.
Only if the program is shut down will the players transfer - JMO.

chance to be a part of helping the program through its darkest time. However, for incoming recruits and redshirt freshmen, the thought of never being able to play for a championship or bowl game is definitely a big issue that will give some of them significant pause.

didn't grow up Penn State fans. They just got an awesome offer from an awesome football program and decided to go there. The PSU football program is no longer awesome - kids are gonna leave - in droves.

in February looking around RIGHT NOW. They have either just gotten onto campus this summer, or will arrive soon. I bet they are strongly considering giving their 2nd choice school a call right now.
As for Juniors and Seniors, they may feel they have already vested too much in PSU to leave. ??
But 2013 commits will leave in droves. Just think about it. They could enroll next year and never see a bowl game. In four years, PSU will be down 40 players. FORTY! Do you think in the next one, two, three years - they will make a bowl game? I doubt it. Even after this four years, they will be trashed for another 3 to 5 years. Will take that long to simply get respectable.
Death Penalty for one year would have been easier.

Their annual scholarship allotment is decreased for incoming players from 25 to 15. That is 10 less players per year, for 4 years.
With scholarships: ~100 scholarship athletes incoming Without scholarships: ~60 scholarship athletes incoming
They will be down 40 players 4 years from now. After that, it will take another 4 recruiting cycles to get back up to a full roster, unless they take on a huge number of non-scholarship walk-ons.

Penn State football is dead ...
Jul 23, 2012, 10:30 AM

It will not recover from this. At least not in the lifetimes of any of the current Tigernet members. This will be much harder to come back from than the "Death Penalty" SMU situation because of the nature of the offenses and stigma that will cling to the PSU program long after the NCAA sanctions are over.

Apex - I think that is still up for debate, but leaning heavily to your side.
We have two examples of severe penalties. SMU and USC.
SMU - still have not gotten back to where they were. USC - Preseason #1 the year they come off probation!
But, I have wondered if the Death Penalty would be easier. These sanctions will destroy the program. And we have not talked about the $60 million. If that comes from the football program - just think of the cuts they will have to make.
You may be right. This could kill them for decades.

Go Count Scholarships again. 85 is the legal limit as we write this. A loss of 40 will leave Penn State With 45 scholarship players.

You are right. 65 scholarships are the limit.
However, they will be limited to 15 scholarships per year for 4 years, instead of 25.
And as lacrostyx stated with and without scholarships, their roster will reduce by 40. That is what I was getting at.
Yes, they may have more than 45 players, but there will be lots of walk-ons. But I do see them with 40 less players than a normal program.
That affects so many things. Down to the practice squad. They will get really bad, really fast.
