If he is offered the job, he takes it. Why the haill would he turn down 8 million $$$$$$$ plus a yr. to keep carrying TE on his back and hear Dabo rant about what a genius TE is. As long as TE is the OC, Venables knows the Tigers will never sniff another natty. A DW and Treavor and ETenne don't come along that often.

I know what I would do, and I think I have a pretty good idea what BV will do, but I'm just going to watch it play out instead of speculating

BV is going to say he has the best job in the world (again) and the best boss in the world (again) and the Tigers will be back in the playoffs next year (again).

He may very well be but we are talking about his taking the OU job if offered. And if he is offered, he will be at OU in 2022. Does he go somewhere else? I have no idea.

A 5 yr. contract at 60 $$$$$$$$million plus guranteed vs. staying DC at Clemson for 12.5$$$$$$$million for 5 yrs. is a no brainer. That would set your family up for life and beyond. OU is one of the best CF jobs in America. It's winning history goes back for decades. That kind of opportunity comes along only once in a coaching career for 99% of college coaches. Venables and Clemson may not be the hot product 3 yrs. from now and that opportunity will have disappeared. I have no idea if OU will even offer BV, but if they do, my bet is on his taking it. I don't see any one they offer turning it down.

He is guaranteed 10 plus million a year no matter where he is. If he stays the DC at Clemson it’s more than that and he’s almost certain to never be fired as long as Dabo is the coach and Dabo will be the coach until he decides he’s done. He can make more money as HC for a year but he can also be fired next year too. OU is the school the didn’t believe in him. Dabo gave him the chance and freedom to be great. He will stay at CU win championships make millions and have 1/4 the stress.

Brent and I are about the same age
Nov 30, 2021, 9:48 AM
[ in reply to Re: Disagree, but I'll just wait and see ] |

I graduated Clemson in 1990, and have worked in a job I hate every day since then. I make less than 10% of what Brent does. I have a wife, kids and debt. That said, if you offered me a 400% raise and promotion to another job I already know I would hate, and with 400% more stress, I doubt I would take it (taking offers, LOL).
Brent is financially secure, in a job that he loves, a place that he loves, and with a boss that he loves. Sure, he wonders "what if", but how much money is enough? He has championship rings coming out of his ears. He is widely recognized as the best there is at his job.
Why fix what ain't broke? He earns more during his current contract than my wife and I will in our lifetimes. At 53, I am looking for ways to reduce stress, reduce workload, and take steps toward retirement. I would take a substantial pay CUT (again, taking offers) to be in a job that I love and that I had the security of knowing that I could stay there for 10, 15 or even 20 years.
Can't understand why at age 50, Brent would be inclined to take on a new role and start over building a track record. Could he cash checks for a couple of years and then take a DC job? Sure, but then he would have failed, would be a couple of years older in a young man's game, and may have tarnished his resume.
If he wants to take a big risk and have his shot at being a national championship head coach, then Oklahoma is a great opportunity to do that, but just remember that Lincoln Riley, already established as a championship level coach, voluntarily walked away.

Has OU or any team on that level offered him? Of course he is going to say what he said when he received no offer he wanted. He had to say that to keep the recruits who had committed.

I agree.
I saw an earlier post that said he would be set for life financially with a head coaching contract. I must have been mistaken, I thought he was making more than minimum wage at Clemson.
In all seriousness, Brent has seen a lot of guys take that next step to head coach and fail after a few years. He has also seen guys leave a good thing and fail after a few years.
Yes he can leave and get a fatter contract with OK. Lord knows he definitely deserves it. OU now joining the SEC changes the game for them in a big way. Not suggesting the SEC is as advertised on the 4 letter network, but it is tougher in my opinion than the Big 12.
The one thing that will not change is expectations. The expectations for the program are 11 to 12 wins per year, conference titles, playoffs, and national championships. Those expectations will now be in place every year playing a much better collection of teams than the current Big 12.
Or, Venables can stay at Clemson where he can stay forever with Dabo, achieve all the same expectations while making $2 million+ annually.
This is not a slam dunk decision for Venables in my opinion. He hasn't called me to discuss this, but I would not at all be surprised if he stays at Clemson.
If he leaves, I hope he is happy and has tremendous success. He has been a part of a great run at Clemson, and I am sure Dabo will make the right moves to continue our success.

Fake fan, you act as if he wasn't given the chance to coach at his alma mater last year. You have no idea what you're talking about. Go touch some grass and convert to a coot. Tony Elliott has more football knowledge in his left pinky toe than you do in your entire body. As does Dabo.

The recruiting base and the money involved would be tough to do better if head coaching is a goal that you have in mind. The only way its a no is if he just doesn't want to do the head coaching thing. I mean it is a massive headache. Way more stress way more responsibility.

And that is one of the things he has said - he has the best job in the country, the best boss in the country and doesn’t want the headache of everything that comes with being a head coach.

aspirations taking on the challenge of being a head coach then that's something going to trump the comfy cozy job. Thats a personal goals type thing. I'm hoping he opts for lower stress too.

Take a look at where Chad Morris is right now and then look how Jeff Scott is doing in South Florida. Grass ain’t always greener on the other side.

I honestly think he stays put until the NFL comes calling. He enjoys being a DC, and maybe his goal is to do that at the highest level. Some people don’t want to believe that, I get it. But there’s nothing wrong with “staying in your lane” and sticking to what you know.

Taking the Oklahoma job can be tricky. You are going to lose most of this recruiting class. You are going to have transfers. You are expected to win the big 12 and make the playoffs with a depleted roster. Whoever takes this job want make it 4 years. You will be a rich man though.

Here he's a legend, almost a deity, Oklahoma is his crazy ex. That only wants him back after realizing what they lost and being embarrassed publicly repeatedly.

OK would be a great job and if offered he would probably take it. However, there is a reason Riley left. He probably did not want to be the one to transition them to the SEC. That’s not going to be easy.
