I have a neighbor who complained about
Aug 3, 2021, 12:53 PM

another neighbor because...wait for it... the neighbor's dog lives OUTSIDE in a DOGHOUSE! oh the humanity! said neighbor said this was inhumane and dogs belong in (human) houses with their "family." They have reported this to the city numerous times and are upset that the dog is allowed to live in a doghouse. I'm assuming this person watches Charlie Brown and his horrified of Snoopy's living conditions.
I have a friend who allows its female dog to sleep in their bed when in heat. It wears a diaper and has only soiled the sheets a few times.... that has to be considered disgusting by any standard....
I have an aunt and uncle who love to travel internationally but have not traveled in at least 5 years as they are caring for their aging, sickly dog. what a way to spend retirement.

I had this conversation with my former boss yesterday

I just don't get it.
Dogs are dogs. They are not people. I'm going to take care of them and love them, but it's a different type of love than the one I have with my kids.
My dogs don't get $500 beds, $40 outfits etc.
They are dogs. They are outside, not inside.
This probably came from growing up with hunting dogs. Having 20 beagles means you can't treat each one like a little human.

In my intown neighborhood several years ago,

a well-known homeless guy who frequented our part of ATL was crossing the street when his dog was hit by a car. The dog was badly injured. It was heartbreaking. The neighborhood got together and raised thousands of dollars (more than $3k, as I recall) for the dog to have needed surgery and subsequent treatment.
For most people, it was a really touching gesture. But for me---and speaking as a dog owner myself---I was really perplexed. For the love of Jobu, wouldn't it be better to euthanize the poor pup and give the homeless guy a few grand to GET HIMSELF OFF THE STREET for at least a few months?

At what financial point is the break for you? If that dog was young, and it could fully recover, raising $3k to save the dogs life seems pretty worth it to me. This animal is likely this persons only companion and the only being that this man trusts, with anything.
We paid $2500 for a surgery for our dog when she was about 8 months old. While it was not a life or death situation, the surgery would greatly improve her quality of life and cut down on future issues. I would do that again, every single time.

Over $2500? For reference, she had a hooded vulva and had recurring UTI infections throughout the first 8 months of her life. This corrective surgery has eliminated those UTI's and now everything is normal down there. $2500 for that seems pretty reasonable.

I don't wanna know how much we spent on our last one - this one I bought health insurance and yes it ain't cheap - $40 month iirc, but we don't have to worry about the surgery, cancer treatment, Addison's disease and something else my other dog had.
Dogs trust us to take care of them and give unrelentless love in return. Him's a good boy.

when her young life vet bills started adding up. But because the issue was "pre-existing" none of the UTI's or surgery would have been covered. So dog insurance, like human insurance, is a scam for the most part.

with some teeth issues and something else, we are basically at breakeven. Not a scam, just cannot cover pre-existing conditions - which makes sense to me.
There is a deductible per incident vs. annual type, so if your dog has two different issues, you have to pay the deductible twice, but then you are covered for any addition stuff on that issue. We have been very pleased with the coverage, never had a claim denied - Trupanion is what we have.

I would probably fork over $3k to keep the old guy going, just like you. That's a privilege that folks like me have, when we have all of life's other necessities covered.
But to be clear---the benefit in that case is really mine, not the dog, who doesn't really know how long he's supposed to live. You see it all the time---people spending hordes of cash to keep a pet going, when the most humane thing to to may be to euthanize it and adopt one of the half-million of other good dogs currently in the shelter waiting to be destroyed.
So in context, I feel like the homeless guy had some pretty immediate needs that weren't being addressed. He doesn't have that same luxury in life. That $3k had a better use.

“Support status” for their dogs. They’re ruining it for everyone.
Yes, your dog is awesome. You’re strong though. You can make it through a Home Depot run or a 2 hour flight without pup by your side.

they are ok with all dogs coming in even the ones that you could never pass as a support dog
both of my dogs have been in Lowes because it was the last item on their dog training, I had to get them to act normal with a bunch of #### going on, was fun to "place" them on top of a pile of drywall

Aug 3, 2021, 7:01 PM
|
|
I see my dog lick his d!ck on the regular. Sometimes he eats #### out in the yard. He farts a lot and makes annoying sounds. Sometimes he's too dumb to realize I went into another room.
Then I get on P&R and I read the posts of T3, Mountaineers, NC_Tiger, Clem Chem, Keowee, et al, and I realize he's still got a higher IQ than them, so I think, well, maybe he deserves to be treated like a person.
