Starting In 2014 Under New NC Playoff System, An ACC Team

Dec 10, 2013, 12:17 PM

will have to go undefeated just to be in serious consideration for one of the top 4 slots to play for the NC, unless the Acc gets much better and ACC teams start playing tougher OOC teams. Strength of schedule is going to be a big factor in picking the final four teams. Had FSU lost a game this season, I don't think they would be playing for the mythical NC. IMO, a one loss FSU would have enabled Auburn, Alabama, Ohio State and Michigan State to be the top 4 teams, and I think the final ranking would have been, Auburn, Michigan State, Alabama, OSU. If FSU does not beat Auburn, it may be a long time before the ACC has another shot at a NC. IMO.

Don't think anyone yet knows how the selection process will work. Could be top 4 teams, but not necessarily. Some have argued for conference champions in top 4 conferences. Who knows,

Bama dropped from 1 to 4 but moved back up with OSU loss

Dec 10, 2013, 12:38 PM

had there been a 3rd undefeated then Bama would have dropped to 5. Bama lost to another team in the top 5 with 1 second left on the road-- any other team also probably stays in the top 5. Now an argument that the SEC as a whole being overvalued is a justifiable argument as it leads to a self-fulfilling prophecy of mulitple teams in the top 5, 10, 20 etc. that do little out of conference scheduling to show their actual strength during the season

to get 16 teams playoff system going. I really think there is some freaken conspiracy of some sort going on. The fifth or sixth team might be the best team in the nation and just got hot late. Also, we all know that college football wins are not transitional. Point and case is the UGA, Clemson, Usuck games and how they went this year.

It just does not make sense to me why and I hate to say it, but I really think the government ought to look into this and help set it up correctly because the current powers are doing a lousy and suspicious job. Hoping the government will layout a good case against ESPN and SEC. It just does not add up and a two year old can see through this sheeeeeeeeeeeeet.

There is a conspiracy. It is called the Bowl system and the amount of money the conferences receive from those Bowl sponsors.

The bowl games aren't going anywhere.

There will still be bowl games for the majority of teams that do not make the 16-team playoff and the bigger bowl venues would host playoff games.

You have to factor in the additional number of games

Dec 10, 2013, 12:38 PM [ in reply to I just don't believe that we can not figure out a way ]

that adds. Each playoff game would be the hardest, most physical game and they come one after the other. Sure, there will be some mismatches, but it's not like adding additional FCS teams to a schedule.

The team that wins the NC might be the one with fewest casualties from a long, brutal playoff in that scenario. Not good in my book. Just my opinion.

Nick, believe this: I have long believed that sooner, rather

Dec 10, 2013, 12:53 PM [ in reply to I just don't believe that we can not figure out a way ]

than later, Congress will involve itself in collegiate athletics if enough schools start screaming loud enough.

There is just too much partisanship in those hallowed (or hollowed...your choice) halls for them not to do so, if one or more thinks their constituency is being slighted. They'll start with hearings, which will include a litany of loud condemnations of the processes, including media involvement...translation: ESPN influence.

And it won't be pretty....

Dec 10, 2013, 12:57 PM [ in reply to I just don't believe that we can not figure out a way ]

Make the two FCS games every year an august game that don't count towards the season.

You have 10 games then for the season and that is it. Have playoff system where the champion crowned from the top 16. You can have the next 16 compete separately (just like the NIT in basketball). You can even have the teams between 32 and 48 rank compete as well in another NIT like and even 49 through 64 compete in a third NIT. However, the champion is from the first 16 teams.

You can have the ball games every year bit on the games and have the cities bit on hosting the games.

Here you go and don't tell anyone that I solved it.

Everyone has a chance, Clemson is better off than many. Win all your games. There Is an extremely small chance a undefeated Clemson would be left out of a playoff. That could only happen if the sec, PAC, big10, and note dame were also undefeated.

If you don't win all your games then be at the mercy of polls and committees.

Florida State will have a great chance next season too. Only losing 2-3 seniors on offense and like 3-4 on defense. They will have their whole RB corps, WR corps (minus Kelvin Benjamin most likely), and Jameis Winston back. After 2014 who knows how FSU will be though. Everyone on their two deep seems to be a junior.

People seem to be under the misconception(delusion)

Dec 10, 2013, 1:01 PM

that the new committee will just use the ESPN, computer, AP and Coaches rankings that exist now to simply choose their top 4. This committee will pick what it perceives to be the top 4. A conference that had 2 embers in it's Championship game this year that were a combined 2-14 in conference play last year just further proves ESPN's homerism.

I'd say the ACC has positioned itself(with 2 BCS bowl, one MNC game and a record setting 11 bowl teams)to move in to the new NON BCS ESPN driven era.

Re: Starting In 2014 Under New NC Playoff System, An ACC Team

Dec 10, 2013, 1:12 PM

Here's my understand of the Playoff's team selections.

"Special consideration will be given to conference champions." Other factors are SOS, W/L record and head to head matchups.

Special consideration was not a term used in conjunction with the any other criteria. I believe, therefor, a team that wins their conference without a loss will make the cut each and every time. If all five major conferences have undefeated champs it appears SOS would be the next determining factor.

I also believe that one loss teams that win their conference will be chosen over other conference's champions that have two losses. If a conference champ has played the runner up in a game and beaten them I think the runner up will be excluded from the playoff.

It appears that having a CCG will prevent the ACC and SEC from seeding two teams because both have their two best teams in one division.
