I Am The Bama Oracle - Ask Away

Jan 4, 2016, 10:36 AM

As a Charter Member of Tide Pride, with a brother who was a fellow athlete and friend of Dabo at Pelham High, I will be happy to answer queries on the Alabama team, history, tradition, 2015 season, possible Monday strategy, et al.

I will also be happy to answer questions on life, love, and the pursuit of happiness.

As I am preparing for a birthday dinner party tonight, answers may come sporadically, but then again, the very secrets of life only reveal themselves at times of their choosing.

In 1964 both the AP and UPI awarded their national championships before the bowl games, partly because Notre Dame did not play in bowls at that time. The same thing with UPI in 1973. You are seriously trying to discredit national championships forwarded by the AP and UPI? Come on man. You're trying to apply standards of a later time retroactivley to an era where both were not viewed as a mechanism for crowning a national champion.

How about an injury report? Everyone good coming out of the MSU game?

What are your thoughts on the NCAA rule on "hours of practice permitted" for each team being different since Clemson's semester already started? I'm not sure craming above 20 hours is the best idea the week before the game either way, so I don't think it matters, though that seems like a big mistake by the NCAA.

What's your opinion of Coker's ability as a QB? Where does he rank from a Bama perspective and what do you expect from him as a fan? Can he win a game for Bama? Is that what you would say happened against MSU? Where do you think he ranks in terms of QBs we've faced and where do you think Watson ranks in terms of QBs you have faced?

Enjoy the game.

No new known injuries at this time for Bama.

Both teams should operate with the same practice rules

Coker has over-achieved, and has the faith of his teammates. I believe the offense will be able to execute in times of extreme duress, should they arise. You have seen several QBs that are better, but Coker is getting better each week.

Watson is the best QB in the nation, but Bama has faced 3 guys rated in the top 10 nationally in QBR. The games Bama played vs Miss. State, Ole miss and Tennessee will be much scrutinized by both sides this week

Regarding Henry (and I didn't watch much of bama this year):

Jan 4, 2016, 11:04 AM

Looks like his stats were down only in games that were put away early by bama.

I suspect we will play man coverage on the outside with 1 safety and otherwise totally sell out to stop him.

Did anyone else defend bama this way? Arkansas?

We have a pretty unique group of players in our secondary and I would imagine we are one of only a few teams that could possibly try to defend this way without giving up a million passing yards.

Thanks, I'll hang up and listen.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Regarding Henry (and I didn't watch much of bama this year):

Jan 4, 2016, 11:10 AM

Basically every team Bama played tried to stop the run game, and failed. In the latter third of the season, LSU, Mississippi St., Auburn, and Florida (all decent to excellent defenses) knew Bama was going to run, and still couldn't stop it.

Henry's stats were unimpressive against MSU because Coker had so much success throwing the ball. No team Bama has played this year has succeeded in stopping Henry when Bama commits to running the ball.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Interdasting. Thanks for the reply

Jan 4, 2016, 11:29 AM

For me, I think the outcome of the game will be predicated on a few simple concepts:

If we can't stop Henry, Bama ground and pounds/controls the clock and win. Sustaining long drives and eating up the clock is probably the template for beating us.

If we can stop Henry AND take care of the football (win the t/o margin), we win.

Will be fun to watch.

Go Tigers!

Re: Regarding Henry (and I didn't watch much of bama this year):

Jan 4, 2016, 11:44 AM [ in reply to Re: Regarding Henry (and I didn't watch much of bama this year): ]

Which of those teams had success on offense against Bama? If Bama's opponent has a top 10 D and an offense with a pulse, it will be very challenging for Bama.

Likewise, if Clemson cannot stop Bama's run game or cannot get long sustained drives on O, it will be challenging for Clemson.

Should be a good game to watch unfold. Since Clemson has more ways it can win a game (Defense, Run O,or Pass O), I think the odds are in the Ioger's favor.

Go Tigers!

Good question. Layman fans tend to think you just load the box and stop the Alabama run game and you can have a chance to win.

In theory this is probably the best approach, however Coker is getting better as he gets more playing time and is getting better in his decision making. Like Clemson Alabama has playmakers all over the field if you try to take one thing away, then we both can counter with trying to exploit other areas of the field. Adjustments will be made in this game and it really all comes down to the execution of the players.

I'm sure the Clemson coaches are looking at the game plans Florida and Tennessee used against the Alabama offense.

I thought we were just insulting South Carolina (and the SEC East by association).

Congratulations on the Sagarin ratings. I figure they're worth about the same as ESPN's FPI which still has Oklahoma ranked #2 and Clemson #5 though we beat them handily on a neutral field. At least the Sagarin formula has us at #2.

games, including their bowl! They are within 10 spots of Wisconsin (26), Tennessee (29), Georgia (32) and Miss State (33). They are ahead of A&M (41), Arkansas (42), Auburn (64), MTSU (67) and La Monroe (123) and of course Charleston Southern. They are ranked higher than six teams Bama played and not far from four more.

PLEASE, man. Please actually pay attention to the sport you're discussing.

Clemson played an SEC team (South Carolina), a Top 10 team (Notre Dame), a Top 35 team (App State) and a local cream puff (Wofford). It's not our fault the Gamecocks are terrible right now...we thought all SEC teams were super-powered.

Beet Bryant and Bama Phil

What do you think Bama's weakness is?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Beet Bryant and Bama Phil

Jan 4, 2016, 11:39 AM

In all honesty this team doesn't have a glaring weakness. The defense is elite, the offense can run and throw, special teams are solid.

Clemson will be the best team we've faced this year. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Probably a secondary that can hold up in man coverage both on the corners and with at least one safety and a disruptive defensive line could cause problems for the offense

Nope. Grew up almost literally in the shadows of Bryant-Denny Stadium. Sat across the table from Dabo at a church Super Bowl party somewhere around '99-'00. Nice guy. And as Bear Bryant said when he came to Bama, when Mama calls you come home. :)

Based on photographic evidence

Jan 4, 2016, 12:18 PM

Isn't it true that your coach is soul stealing immortal that was once known here in South Carolina as major political figure? Doesn't this provide your team an exceptional advantage due to his centuries of football experience?

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Based on photographic evidence

Jan 4, 2016, 12:33 PM

Yes, it is true that having Nick Saban as our coach gives us an exceptional advantage. I can neither confirm not deny that Saban is an immortal responsible for the Egyptian Pyramids, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, the building of Rome and the rise of the US as the world's great superpower.

Q & A thing. Pretty nice. One last question from me, based on all of the previous questions and answers:

I have read your testimony on how good you are, running the ball, passing, no team can stop you if you dont stop yourself, 4th quarter team, mental toughness, premier Coach. My question ( whew already, huh ?)

Do you both feel this 2015 Alabama team is the best collection of highly skilled football players in Collegiate history?

Don't think you had any of that overbearing rhetoric from me, maybe from the guy that somehow inserted himself into my thread.? However the season is not over but I did think we are very good but let's wait and see how the season plays out.
