How can you blame the in-game coaching of defensive coordinator that has vastly improved our defense? How can you blame a head coach that has won 27 of 33 and 17 of 19, 3 division titles and 1 ACC title? How can you blame the best offensive coordinator in Clemson history? Saturday was not the result of bad in-game coaching by these men.
Their calls on the field are not to blame. This is a perfect case of it not being the X's and O's but rather the Jimmys and Joes. We have excellent talent from years of good recruiting, but our wonderful signing days have not compared to FSU's signing days of being #1,2,3 in the nation. That showed Saturday night. Could we have still beaten them, yes? We have had good enough recruiting years to still beat them, but when you combine the recruiting difference with the absolute silver platter give-aways we gave them with the opening fumble and later the scoop and score, you have an ugly final score. Still, we were driving with the chance to close the gap to 10-7 and 17-10 or 17-14 at times in the first half.
Also to magnify the recruiting difference is their quarterback that is absolutely Heisman material. Who could have imagined that they would replace Manuel with a freshman that is even better. The good news is that he is a redshirt freshman and next year will probably be his last year instead of the year after. He will go pro after next season. The next time FSU comes to the Valley, they should arrive without Jameis Winston.
But Saturday, it was all about a difference in talent, and turnovers from the very beginning were gasoline the fire.
I would like to know why our offensive line is always iffy year in and year out it seems, even against teams of less talent. And it seems our offensive line was better earlier in the season than they are now.
I really don't fault Tahj. I think he is a great leader and quarterback. I was watching the BC game from the upper deck. Most of the time he has very little time to make a decision or avoid disaster. When he has time to throw, most of the time he drops it right in the bucket or hits them right on target. He has also been tough and taken his licks right after throwing the ball. We are think at db and will be thinner thanks to Breeland's suspension, but I think the most disappointing bunch this year has been the offensive line. I know Caldwell is supposed to be good, but I haven't seen great improvement there over the years since he's been here.
But read Mickey's blog and it is hard to disagree with what he is saying about last Saturday's game.

You may want to re-read his blog.
Mickey even says we got outcoached.
The outcome of this game wasn't decided by talent or coaching, but a combination of both.
FSU has better talent. If you compare the depth charts and recruiting rankings, that fact becomes immediately obvious, but the talent deficit alone doesn't explain the worst home loss in Clemson history.
Talent was the match that started the fire. Coaching was the gasoline that turned the fire into an all out blaze.

exactly. There is plenty of blame to go around. One thing going wrong doesn't result in a score like that. You have to have multiple things going on to get it that bad.
Personally though, I find it much easier to criticize grown men making more in a couple of years than most people make in a career than to criticize some 20 year olds.
Especially since the ultimate responsibility for determining which Jimmys and Joes get scholarships and playing time also rests with those grown men.

stood out to me was the talent. And I disagree with the coaching being the gasoline that turned the fire into a blaze, rather I think the early turnovers turned the fire that was a talent difference into an all out blaze.

I suppose I should have been a bit more specific.
Turnovers can happen to the best of teams, but its up to the coaches to manage the emotions and attitude, so that one turnover doesn't end up turning into a pile of them. A fumble on the first play stinks, but it's no where near as bad as losing a talent like Watkins on a fumble to start the game like happened in the GA dome.
If the qb isn't in a rhythm, its up to the coaches to call plays to help establish a rhythm. Not to just have him continue to chuck balls down field.
If the team isn't prepared, that falls on the coaches.
I just don't understand how you can look at that game and come away feeling as if the coaching staff did everything they could to win it.

Offensive line will always be iffy, and we will from time to get embarrassed until we address the mental and physical strength of the team. It has been evident for over many years and this will end up being Dabo's Rob Spence, and as we did with Tommy, we will have to live through it.
There, I said it without mentioning the person that needs to go, cause for some including Dabo, god forbid we ever criticize that aspect of the program.

but nothing was working anyway.
Our OL was getting killed and we called a number of slow developing plays and very few quick slants etc. I also don't understand that quick toss to the flats. Why do we throw to a stationary WR? Let Sammy catch it in stride, not at a dead stop.
But the worlds greatest play calls weren't going to work on Saturday so no need to get down over that. The one thing I think we can harp on Morris about is his run game strategy. Maybe we just can't run the ball, but we sure can't run the ball in a read type of play, Let HotRod just run to a hole or a spot on the field like FSU did. Then he is attacking the LOS.
