Former USC assistant Mangus joins program at championship-winning Hammond School



G.A. Mangus is joining one of the top Midlands football program’s coaching staff.

The former South Carolina assistant coach will be the new offensive coordinator at Hammond School, sources with knowledge of the hire told The State. The school officially announced the hire Thursday.

“We are excited to announce our new Offensive Coordinator, GA Mangus. Coach Mangus brings a ton of experience to our program. As QB coach for @GamecockFB, he helped lead USC to the 3 best seasons in school history while coaching legendary QB @cmshaw14,” Hammond posted on its football Twitter account.

Mangus spent last season on Heathwood Hall’s coaching staff and faced off against the Skyhawks. Hammond is coming off its fourth-straight SCISA championship last season and 20th in school history.

Mangus spent six years on the Gamecocks coaching staff under Steve Spurrier. where he was quarterbacks coach and tight ends coach. He was the offensive coordinator when Spurrier stepped down in October of the 2015 season.

USC had three straight 11-win seasons from 2011-13 and enjoyed one of the most successful runs in program history.

“It didn’t happen overnight that first season in 2009, but we had recruited some good young players and felt that year kind of established the blocks and the following year, the rest is history in that 2010, 2011, 2013 run,” Mangus said in 2021. “.... Obviously it didn’t end the way it started. You wish maybe that wouldn’t have happened, but those years from (2010 to 2014) with that staff, those are the things you just never forget.”

After USC, Mangus spent one year at S.C. State offensive coordinator and three seasons at Division II Kutztown College. He also was coach in the XFL for the New York Guardians.
