Herbstreit quote about Clowney & Sammy live on ESPN
Oct 8, 2013, 1:56 PM
|
|
He started out saying Clowney is letting people down and needs to leave the team because its a team game. He says that he isn't a team player and needs to give up playing this year because he obviously does not want to be there.
Then he says this:
"Look at Sammy Watkins. He burst out on the scene as a freshman and Mel Kiper came out and said that if he was drafted as a freshman, he could be the #1 overall pick. What does Sammy do his sophomore year? He has a terrible year! What is Sammy doing now in his junior year? He is absolutely lighting it up and trying to carry his team to a championship. Its a different mindset between players. One is trying to help himself and the other is trying to win."
I thought this was pretty interesting from Kirk. Ripping Doo-Doo and praising Sammy for all he is doing...even though saying his sophomore year was, quote on quote, "terrible" is a joke, but still. Thoughts?

I think he is on point. Sammy could have come out flat this year and could have been a baby last year when Nuk was lighting it up, but he didn't. Now he is back to old Sammy and out running the whole NCAA.

getting injured so his draft stock doesn't fall but you gotta think it's probably plummeting with this selfish, childish, prima donna display.
It's awesome!

only about 75% wanting to "play for free," this season to start with. He didn't show out against UNC, air came out of the Heisman baloon, then even more against UGA. At that point, those in his ear won out and he quit on his team.

agree!! however he is just showing how selfish he is.. One report said he probably had dropped 10-15 rounds in the draft.. NFL teams are looking @ more than football ability now!!

Did you mean spots? I don't think there are that many rounds in the draft...

Not sure how he feels about Slurrier, Bozo, and the cast of characters in cootville.
One thing I would take exception to: Sammy hardly had a "terrible" year last year. He just didn't have a "Sammy Watkins" kind of year.

seems as though he was comparing Sammy last year after all the early Heisman hype to Clowney this year after all the early Heisman hype.
The difference is that Clowney doesn't have next year to come out a shine like Sammy is now.
not sure it was a full slam of Clowney without being a slight slam on Sammy

the attitude of the respective coachs, dabo coaches his players to win in football and life. Slurrier uses his players to stroke his ego.

and i'm not saying that because he's ripping a Chicken player. Herbie, as far as i'm concerned, is the list starter when you're talking about the best suits in front of a mike in CFB broadcasting. You start the list with him, everyone else is competing for 2nd and on down. He's fair, believes in what he believes in with zero agenda and he's a class act. I hope he hangs around for years and years.

Agree with you 100%. Herbie may say stuff that people may not like, but he speaks from his heart and from his vast knowledge of the sport. He's not pushing an agenda and doesn't play favorites.
He is the best in the business, without question.

LOVING EVERY SINGLE MINUTE OF THIS CLOWNEY MESS!! He and Spurrier deserve every word of it too!! JD is a complete joke and it makes me sick to hear the NFL managers say this is not hurting his draft stock!! If you are going to run your big mouth preseason and during season, you better back it up which he hasn't done so he deserves to get bashed. Brought it on himself. Hate to Dabo's response to one of our players if they ever pulled that crap!

Someone needs to inform Kirk that a "terrible" year for Sammy is a "great" year for 90% of all the WR's in the country.

...by Watkins' standard. So Herbstreit is correct, from a certain point of view.
