Just this. When the OP talks about heavily commpressed, he is talking about MP3. There are excellent digital formats that do not lose anything from "vinyl" or analog. I won't go into how "Lossless" format works, but check into FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec), ALAC (for you apple folks), and WMA (microsoft) lossless. There are others.
If you just like the romance of vinyl... that is fine... but there are digital formats infinitely better than MP3.
Cheap headphones, earbuds, or speakers... it makes no difference anyway. But if you are audiophile, lossless is VERY good.
