In 2010, coaches deferred on 77 of the 256 coin tosses.
Sep 10, 2013, 12:08 PM
|
|
In 2010, 30% of NFL teams who won the coin toss, chose to defer to the second half. In all cases, they deferred and chose to receive the ball in the second half. That is, in 2010, 30% of NFL head coaches chose to play defense first. In other words, "sometimes teams choose to play defense first".
Thank you. Thank you very much. Apologies accepted.

Obviously you're confused about what DEFERRED

means.
When you "defer" to the second half, you don't defer getting the ball, you defer your choice of kicking or receiving.
Ergo, if one team defers to the second half and the other team elects to kick. 10/10 times, the deferred choice for the coin-toss-winning team will be to receive. Again.

Defer means deferring the option to choose

for the second half.
UNC lost the coin flip. The other team deferred to the second half. This means UNC had to the option to kick or receive. The other team would get the same option in the second half.
UNC electing to kick and getting one less possession of the football was a very dumb move.
The point of football is to get the ball and run it over the goal line. Why would you want to give up the football?

to receive the ball first if the other team chose to kick first. They did not choose to play defense first. They chose to defer (or choose later) and as such were agreeable to play defense first should the other team (wisely) choose to receive the ball.

People, he is saying when a coach defers he is choosing to play defense first. He is correct. Now, sometimes the other team, who now has the choice of playing offense or defense in the 1st half, mistakenly decides to play defense. THAT DOESN'T CHANGE THE FACT THAT THE DEFERRING COACH WAS PLANNING ON PLAYING DEFENSE FIRST!

for the serious ones in the conversation...
have the rules changed? I specifically remember in high school, if we won the toss, we always opted to play defense first and would recieve the kick to begin the 2nd half. maybe high school rules are different.
I always thought you had two choices if you win the toss... 1) you elect to either kick or recieve. then roles were reversed for the 2nd half. the opponent chooses which end to defend 2) or you defer your choice to the opposing team, in turn you elect which end zone you want to defend. then whoever kicks in the 1st half would receive in the 2nd.

but I'm pretty sure it's been this way in college and the NFL for a long time.
On Madden and NCAA, it's as you described it. Maybe that's where the confusion comes in.

but if you choose to kick it to them, there is no reason they HAVE to kick it to you in the second half.
No team, in their right mind, is choosing to play defense first. They may wish to do so and understand their wish will mostly likely be granted when they defer the choice to the other team.

UNC decided to kickoff when the other team deferred to them.
Thus UNC would have to kickoff for the beginning of the game and the second half.
Dr was trying to justify UNC's idiotic decision

No, I saw the initial argument
Sep 10, 2013, 4:18 PM

His initial comment was "Some people like to start the game playing defense." That's not necessarily defending UNC's choice, and I find it hard to believe that he refuses to believe what 100 T-netters are telling him is the rule. I think he knows the rule.

The original post never argued that people don't DEFER starting the game, instead he was saying no team chooses to KICK (meaning they will not receive either half). If you had understood that from the beginning then you would have never posted your comment to begin with. The quote you provided states..."In all cases, they DEFERRED and chose to RECEIVE the ball in the second half..." UNC KICKED starting both halfs (meaning they never received the ball either half) hence the original post that was poking fun at the tarholes. So I doubt anyone is going to apologize.
