A rock and a hard place...

Jun 13, 2012, 6:31 PM

It has been made clear to us that the idea of leaving the ACC has caused some recruiting woes. I understand that Dabo is trying to save his recruiting class and I respect that. That being said I'm not sure what exactly to make of the comments.

Is this a 'hey, who would know better than the head coach.' Or 'hey, he can say whatever he wants now, but the actual decision will be made by the big boys, then he can claim to recruits he had no clue..'

Also, when we say this is hurting recruiting, are we talking 1-3 recruits or half the class? I understand that teams around us are using this conference instability against us in recruiting right now. 'Hey, you parents won't be able to see you play in the Big XII' (Even though realistically 8 of 12 games every year will be in the state of SC. And of the 4 away games FSU and WV are very possible.)

I am actually a little surprised by reports of recruiting backlash. If I'm a recruit that is in love with Clemson and the coaches or coordinators, and now you're saying we may be going to the Big XII. That sets up for some huge national exposure, Texas or Okla coming to play in Death Valley..those games would be nuts!

The reason I say we are between a rock and a hard place is because I fear that as soon as we decide to stay (especially if FSU were to leave without us) we get 2-3 years down the road and the landscape of college football has changed with the playoff system and what not. Now the same teams that are recruiting against us with Big XII rumors are now recruiting against us with 'Hey, you don't want to play at Clemson, you want to play big time college football. You want a chance to play in big bowls every year with a better shot at the NC. At Clemson you'll be playing Duke and Wake.'

Thoughts?

Agreed. But if you know where the money is, wouldn't you

be neglecting your duties to consider such things?

I dont think that is knowable till the system is in place

Good post.

Jun 13, 2012, 6:36 PM

But there's no need to jump the gun. Schools like VT,FSU,GT and Clemson will be heavily sought after if CFB would go to these oft rumored 4 - 16 team super conferences. So making a decision is haste just to make this year's August 15 deadline is just not sound.

If we are not Big12 and not SEC, then which 16 team

Jun 13, 2012, 6:45 PM [ in reply to Good post. ]

Yea that's a good point..don't want to make a decision in haste. Whatever decision is made should be what is best for Clemson in the long run. I just don't want to lose prominence in college football over the next 5-10 years because we can't compete financially.

PS-Laurens, SC? That's where I'm from..

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Correct. You definitely don't want to make decisions

Jun 13, 2012, 7:36 PM [ in reply to Good post. ]

hastily. However, if we're proactive, can we put ourselves in a position to better negotiate the terms of the move (ie: when do we get full share, what about the exit fee?) and if we wait too long, could that hurt our negotiating power?

The only certainty is that there is about to be a lot of money made. I hope Clemson get as much as possible. I hope we get way more money that we deserve.

question is put to rest once and for all. And, if we are leaving, preparing to leave, or considering it, then we will be in this state of limbo until an official announcement can be made. If not, TDP or BOT could put and end to it today.

How often do you think we'll play UT in Death Valley?

Jun 13, 2012, 7:59 PM

People seem to think we'll be playing UT and OU every year. In reality we'll get one every year. The other, probably UT, we'll see as often as we see UVA today.

The teams in our division would be Iowa St, K State, Kansas, WVU and FSU (I assume).

Jun 13, 2012, 8:03 PM

Yeah I realize it won't be often, I was just making the point that it sets up some big time, high profile matchups..both in DV and on the road. Alot of recruits love the exposure and idea of big games.

Said he hardly ever recruited against the ACC for top recruits and most of the time it was against the SEC. He said the money is a big deal.

That being said if what is being reported about us being a backup plan to ND and the Big 12 not taking us...... The powers that be will have to say we never were going to save face with the public and the ACC

Re: A rock and a hard place...

Jun 13, 2012, 9:01 PM

Good thoughts. Brings up another point. While you are correct that you could be telling recruits about the increased exposure of big 12 what are you then saying about acc? And then what if you stay? Then you have recruits that you have been told they are going to a better conference and you now have to tell them the acc is actually the better deal. Plus, you have probably already been selling them the acc since you started recruiting them. Could get sticky.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: A rock and a hard place...

Jun 13, 2012, 9:40 PM

No I'm definitely not saying that Dabo and crew should be selling the Big XII right now..that would definitely be premature. You sell your conference until a move is completely final..then sell your new conference. I'm just saying that as a recruit I don't know why you would no longer consider Clemson if they moved to the Big XII. Wouldn't more national exposure outweigh the 2-3 long road trips each year? If this is about parents seeing you play, they will still have to travel to Syracuse, BC, Maryland, and Pitt. You'll have 7-8 home games, if you have 7, the other away game will be in Columbia. Then you have 4 road games, one being either FSU or WV.
