Georgia fight song?

I was at Clemson in 1972. In the early 70s we always play Ga Tech (back when they were an independent) and then play Georgia.
But I never thought even one time, why is the University of Georgia fight song The Battle Hymn Of The Republic; an old yankee fight song?
I guess I should have posted this on the Georgia football board, But I'm sorry, I'm not redneck enough,

Have always wondered this. Maybe a condition of reconstruction. We will occupy your town unless you make this your song.

Thanks for posting this article. Very cool reading the history behind their use of that song.

Thanks, I didn't know the history of "Glory", but i do enjoy hearing it played on solo trumpet before games, as I enjoy "Battle Hymn". They also dropped the word "Dixie" from the marching band name, and became the Redcoat Band in about 1971, At the same time, they also stopped playing Dixie as a game opener.

Since all their players are mostly convicts and what not, it seemed fitting.

Ole Miss can no longer play Dixieland, even though it was written well before the civil war. They can’t play the “Dixie with love” medley either. I’m 100% against racism but it’s a tragedy that amazing song was cancelled at Ole Miss.

UGa is very dodgy. Besides the fight song, their band is also called the redcoats. Never could trust the traitorous riff raff from that debtors colony.
By the way, Colorado also has the same Battle Hymn of the Republic fight song.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that.
I can only hear "To hell (hades), to hell (hades) with Georgia, the cesspool of the South" when they play their fight song, which we sang with gusto in my days at Clemson.

It’s not my favorite or anything but cool tune. Weird it ended up GA’s fight song though. I like Texas’ Eyes of TX to the tune of I’ve been working on the railroad. Now that’s a fight song. It was nearly cancelled too.

Likewise. I remember the same thing, and it’s what I immediately think of whenever I hear it in a UGA football context.

I always thought they did it to snub their noses at the the ####### Yankees. Take their beloved, glorious battle hymn and make it all about a Confederate state.

I don’t see anyone mentioning it but “Blood on the risers” is an old WW2 airborne infantry song which UGA tailored to make their own. I’m not sure if you’re referring to the same song. “Gory, Gory what a hell of a way to die” about jumping into WW2 & being killed before you touch the ground. Used to get us pretty amped up in the 82nd Airborne division when I was there for a bit.
