Just got in ........

Sep 30, 2012, 3:55 PM

from beantown and was glad to get home to some nice fall weather. Boston is a great city but the weatherman sure didn't do his part this weekend!Visiting other stadiums, especially Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, sure makes me appreciate Death Valley and Clemson. I actually saw a few people tailgateing this year, but not many! BC is a good opponent but college football outside of the south just isn't the same. One thing that I did find very comforting is the fact that people outside of our area really know who and where Clemson is now. I ran into several people (BC alums) who told me that their sons were going to Clemson next year. They had visited on game day and immediately fell in love with our campus and school. I also met a young grad student at Tufts who told me that he and his girlfriend had saved up all year to make their first weekend football trip to Clemson. He said that of all the places he had heard and read about, that Clemson was the most exciting for them. Makes you feel good to hear perfect strangers say thing about Clemson that you already knew. I told him that he made a great choice when he selected the GT game. Let's get the Valley rocking next weekend.

The only negative that I was told this weekend by a fan was the BC was a lot harder to get into than Clemson and that they would never be able to have the kind of players that we have. Not real sure about that. Of course I have heard 'tarheelians' say that for years! But not recently!lol

Geez. The NCAA has been adminstrating college athletics for

like, what, a million years now, and people like him dont know how that works and people like you dont know how to answer those idiots? The ONLY requirement for an athlete's admission is the NCAA minimum requirement, and in our case an slightly higher conference requirement. A school can take any athlete they want who meets those, and they all do.

If he pulled your leg on that issue, he might actually have a point.

Take a break on being so critical. Sounds like your jealous you didn't make the trip.

I really can't agree with everything that you say. I know from personal experience that most schools have different admission standards for athletes. Some find a way to circumvent these standards as we have seen our friends in Chapel Hill do recently.
As a side note to this, I am especially pleased with the record graduation rates that Clemson has shown for their athletes. Earning a meaningful degree is the most satisfying accomplishment that a student athlete can achieve. imo.

Some schools require more than the NCAA minimums. I dont know the specifics of BC's requirements vs Clemson's but it is possible. Schools like Vandy, Duke, Northwestern, etc, probably dont let the minimums in because they would have to act like UNC to get them through freshman english.

The BC fan would probably be surprised by the current incoming freshman class test score comparisons of both schools. The middle 50% ACT scores were 29-32 for BC and 26-31 for CU. I didnt do SAT because CU doesnt report writing scores and BC did. Hard to compare but estimated scores were similar to ACT comparison.

Prolly a typical yankee who thought getting into any "Southern" university is a piece of cake.

Actually he was an extremely nice guy and talked very highly of Clemson. He remarked that BC had 8500 students and I told him that Clemson had about twice that many but was still a small school. He also was an Irish Catholic who was surprised that ND is joining up with the ACC.
Clemson still has the 'stigma' of being a cow college to some although not nearly as much as years ago. Not that there is anything wrong with that. I an Ag. School grad myself but President Barker is doing a great job of structuring Clemson to be a total institution ...imo.
