surgeon, called and said,"Spud, you need to start playing pickle ball!". I said,"Nope, CRB has been after me to plat too, but I cannot move quickly side to side anymore...and you know how competitive I am and as soon as I really got into it....I would make a quick move without thinking and BAM!. Also, my brother in law was playing it last year and he tripped and fell and the first thing that hit was his cheek bone,,,knocked him COLD AS A CUCUMBER and gave him issues with his sight for a good while....NO SIR, I run just to stay in shape to jump on the front deck of my boat and fish. No other reason...AND YOU SHOULDN'T BE PLAYING IT EITHER!!!!".
Well boys, he just called....He said,"Well Spud, I should have listened to you...". I said,"Whajjya break?"....Dr. Sherrill said,"Tore my achilles". I said,"Well, I'm no doctor ....but I do sleep at a Holliday Inn on occassion...."...
And in all sincerity, I hate it for my buddy. At 65....losing a year of playing golf sucks...I know I urge all of you to exercise...BUT IF YOU TAKE ME UP ON IT.....Go Slow until you figure out what you can get away with....

"career killer" for an athlete. But, like a lot of other orthopedic surgeries, advancements in methods and rehab have made it something that is just a bump on the road now, for the most part. A BIG bump, to be sure, but no longer a career killer.
Heck, even old man Dark Retreater Aaron Rodgers looks to be making a comeback after Achilles surgery. If HE can do it, anybody can.

I play pickleball and love it. I will never be that good but, I don’t care. I have been fortunate to not get hurt while playing. I do know that shoes are important. At my annual checkup two months ago, my doctor told me that he is convinced that pickleball was invented by orthopedic surgeons.

I can relate, Spud. Walking up my stairs a couple weeks ago when suddenly I was tilting backwards. Have no idea why. Next thing I knew I on my back on a landing below with my legs folded back underneath me. Don't know why it happened or what the cause could possibly be. Scrapes, bruises and a concussion. Did manage to crawl up the stairs, drive myself to the ER, causing quite a stir when I showed up in my underwear. Don't really remember driving there?
If walking up stairs is a problem, I , like you, believe Pickleball is out of the question for me!

no one is there, I back it off the trailer and just pull up on the adjoing ramp and park my Yukon. Then I hustle back down and step on the sidewalk between the two ramps and push it off...hoping on the front of the deck right beside the trolling motor and then skipping on to the main deck and back to the driver's seat. I work on my balance every day.....but still, I wonder how much longer,at 65 now, I can do that before a take a dive in the lake,LOL. I will post a pic the day it happens!!!

From my experience, you have 3 to 5 more years before you become as clumsy as an elephant, constantly knocking over things. Told my wife not to ever leave a container of liquid out on a counter because I will surely distribute it over the kitchen floor when I walk by.

know many a runner who, by time hit 40's ... knee replacement, hip replacement ... wear and tear and impact. Really, if this was the Middle Ages, anybody in their 40's would be dead or considered really old. Love hiking but not camping. After a good long hike gimme a nice meal and a good Hotel room (if not local).

I have a friend who is an orthopedic in Ft. Lauderdale, and he told me that business has been booming since people started playing Pickle Ball. I thought that's what your friend was going to tell you.

It’s great to exercise. For me it’s stretching, little bit of light weights (don’t need to tear anything) and then walking 5 days a week at minimum of 3mph for 30 Minutes. Gotta keep blood flowing. The heart is the most important muscle we have.

Good advice.
I went too hard in my teens and 20s, and am paying for it now.
I won't be doing any sports besides walking, cycling, and light weightlifting.

Since I'm now five months from 77 and with a 13 year old hip replacement, have to be careful about exercise activities. No softball, basketball or pickleball. Also now without a wife, also need to ensure my health doesn't severely impact my son and oldest daughter's time and support. So, golf and working out on weight machines at the Y along with a 20 minute per mile walk on a treadmill is about it. The only other significant issue is lower back pain at times which is now arthritis, likely stemming from straining it in '66 while working the second of three summers at Union Bleachery's Inspection and Packing Dept. Fortunately the only prescription med needed is pantoprazole.

I have learned not to push my limits anymore too. I played basketball every opportunity I got between the ages of 12 and 45. At 45, I tore one of the attachments in my right bicep. Doctor called it a Popeye tear because it rolled down and formed a large lump on the muscle. By the time the MRIs and doctor visits were done they said surgery would just be for cosmetic purposes because they couldn’t stretch it back to where it was supposed to attach. Thank goodness the other attachment seemed ok so I didn’t do the surgery and I still have the big lump. And I quit playing basketball. I’m 61 now and have some hip and leg pain the doctors say is sciatica. Went to PT and learned some stretches and exercises that make it manageable. So I don’t even run any more. I will hike up to 7 or 8 miles to see a waterfall and I’ve been walking 18 holes of golf once or twice a week. I go to the gym and work with the machines 1-3 times a week depending on the weather and how many times I play golf. Seems like it’s keeping me in good enough shape to be able to do the things I want to do. As long as I can still walk through the woods and climb a ladder stand I’ll be fine.

for 45+ years including weights, bungees, running in place or on step-master for 5-10K steps daily when possible and occasionally add in trampoline work.
Also, shag danced regularly for 7 years straight but quit 9 yrs ago due to partner and my lungs & sharp mind know it..
but do boat out on ICW & back coastal waters 12-15 times a year by myself, but not as many times as SPuD, and cross my fingers I don’t do something stupid and slip or fall.
