Vt has a top 20-30, depending on service, class coming in. They by far have the worst facilities in the acc and have had zero fan support the past few yrs. I don't even see us listed in the rankings.

I think both Va. Tech and FSU have new player facilities. The coliseum at Va. Tech is old. Actually, Littlejohn Coliseum was modeled after Cassell Coloseum at Va. Tech. Tucker Coliseum in Tallahassee has recently been remodeled. Unless something has changed, the coliseum in Tallahassee is owned by Leon County and not FSU.

Both happen to be located in basketball hot beds. I'm guessing each state probably puts out twice as many D1 players as South Carolina.

Being in a basketball hotbed full of all of those recruits does not seem to help them; yet they have a pile of highly rated recruits, all of which come from outside of FLA. I'm not going to dig them all back out now, but a while back, maybe a year or two ago, I showed how a lot of good basketball teams, some located in basketball hotbeds, and some not, got the majority of their best and most highly rated players from well outside their recruiting area. I'm sure it's an advantage for some teams, but not being in a basketball hotbed is not a good excuse for poor recruiting as plenty of schools are successful outside of their area.

When you throw in facilities poor you give up an entire season to fix them, fan apathy until conference play starts, and what I'm guessing is a limited recruiting budget, and you are stuck with regional recruits. FSU goes and gets kids from Canada, Alaska, and the Canary Islands. You think DRaf is going to send Brad over to the Canary Islands any time soon.

facilities have hurt us a lot. New digs won't automatically bring better players, but they are an absolute necessity if we seriously expect to attract better players. I know it won't be the same as playing at home, on campus, but I think fan support will be excellent in Greenville next season. I don't know anything about our recruiting budget, but if we are serious about basketball, then that's part of the commitment I've talked about. I sure hope we're serious, because we DO have to go outside of SC if we are.

from Blacksburg, and I'm pretty sure we're closer than they are. Their #2 scorer is from Dayton OH; that's 331 miles away, and Indiana, Loiusville, Kentucky, and Cincinnatti are all closer than they are. They are able to go all over and get good players, not just in their backyard or footprint.

One of Buzz's main jobs is to get into D.C. and Virginia Tidewater. He has a 4 star from va beach and a three star from Maryland this year. He was hired because Va tech was losing out on that talent.

Define "recruiting area"; maybe I misunderstood.
Mar 11, 2015, 8:29 PM
|

I took that to mean areas where you would expect the school to have a lot of fans and influence, generally in close proximity and therefore easier to develop relationships with coaches and recruits. I have certainly refuted that has been a significant factor in their recruiting success.

How has recruiting the DMV area helped VT get players
Mar 11, 2015, 8:47 PM
|
|
From Jonesboro, GA, Augusta GA, Dayton OH, Akron OH, etc? Only one of their top 7 scorers came from that area; they have not been successful there. Again, it would be like us going to Lexington KY, or the DMV area to get our best players. Their lack of success in the DMV area has not stopped them from going well outside that area to get good players, so when comparing, we can't use the lack of good players in SC as an excuse; good recruiters go outside the area to get good players.

Va tech shelled out big money to get a guy that can recruit DMV and the Tidewater. 2 of 3 recurs in his last class are from that area. Va Tech sucks because they haven't been able to pull that talent, and they made a huge investment to fix that problem. Change coaches all you want but there is no fixing the lack of talent In SC.

No... But the way nly reason n why Duke's arena remains is BC it has become storied. Why? BC Coach K built an elite program.
But I bet they have the nicest practice digs, locker room, training facility, training table, travel budget, and gear.
Can we say about Clemson?

I don't disagree with your post , but while Cassell Coliseum isn't the best , they did just build a state of the art 21 million dollar practice facility . I'm not saying that's why they have a top 25 class coming, but it sure doesn't hurt. Overall, I think having the right coach who can sell the program is more important then all the bells and whistles.

That thing ain't anything better than we currently have. Regardless, my point is every tries to excuse brads recruiting on our fans and our facilities. Op used to get top 30 classes in. I'm not eve sure brad has gotten a top 40 class yet. That won't fly in the acc.

The other side of that argument is the pos school south of us...they have a super nice arena and facilities and they are still bad... it's ultimately having a coach that can sell the brand and get guys excited about coming to clemson

Fact is Brad recruited the best player in recent Clemson memory, just brought in a 4 star stretch 4 and a 4star Pg. All with facilities so poor they are giving up an entire season to fix them.

First of all Ppl like you twist things into things they are not...I never said every single guy he recruits suck or he's can't get decent players... I believe that blossomgame and Grantham can be great you can see the potential ...but after those guys there's not much and you are talking about a kid that hasn't even played a second yet in Hudson... just wait until BB pounds defense in their head he won't shoot near as good as he did lol jk but I just think we need a couple of shooter and we woukd be fine...pure shooters than can hit mid Range shots...and you need more than one to take pressure off of other guys if you want to be good. I Def give him credit for those guys I mean those were big gets...now let's see if it translates into wins

Honestly I think this is why Ppl are so fed up and frustrated because that's what clemson fans have been hearing for the last few years...Yea recruiting is supposedly better but what do we have to show for it ? I think it will all work out...we have some good young talent and if he can't At least make the tourney in the next couple years with this talent it's a no brainer...if he can use the new look LJ to his advantage and can develop these players and move forward a little then that's even better! I hope the guys succeeds but you are talking about year 5 and the only thing so far is a KJ led team that went to the nit and a tourney trip with all of OPs players... that honestly was an underachieving team imo.

I will say that recruiting is improving
Mar 11, 2015, 10:51 PM

but we still aren't getting instant impact recruits. When Brad talks about not having "top 50" guys, that's what he's talking about. So yes, it is improving, but yes, you still have to wait. Grantham is probably the biggest "instant impact" guy he's had, but you're still going to have to wait to see him develop. I think Brad had a few bad classes to start this off because he had 0 connections in the region. You are going to see that start to flush out of the program in next few years, and you are seeing him replace that talent with better talent.

That's actually a good point on recruiting the first couple years... and I really like blossomgame I thinj he can be a star ... but all this talk about hudson and the other 4* lid we have coming in will have a huge impact on his future...that's all clemson fans talk about and I played basketball and def realize how much a mediocre pg can kill a team... I mean that's what controls how good you are on offense ...so the Ppl that don't understand that and how much that hurts us keep hearing these kids will make things better. I think they will but at this point Ppl don't have a lot of confidence in BB and it's kind of a wait and see attitude I think for most

So Coach BB and his staff develop guys?
Glad to see someone on Tnet supporting the coach. I know I do.
He is here. He is working and building a foundation. He needs to get a little better in recruiting. He is getting better facilities. And he gets 2 to 3 years to see how he csn advance the program.
If he doesn't I will support a move then.

Good thread. Few things I would add is most exceptional coaches have turned the corner by year 5. Most can also recruit at the upper tier of their conference and almost all control their home court and home state recruiting turf. Brad has a considerable ways to go by most of those metrics. Still hope he gets it done.

What are you considering the "upper tier" of the ACC

I doubt Clemson ever recruits on that level, regardless of the coach.

You're right. I'd much rather be in VT's shoes.
