Dose of reality

Dec 31, 2022, 8:38 AM

The truth is, when we were making our CFP run, we had elite talent at all the skilled positions. We overcame an average offensive line with scheme, great skill players and above average play calling - both defensively and offensively.

Today, we have above average talent, but not elite. We have the same average offensive line and we have have two rookie coordinators.

If we are to get back to the CFP (top 4 teams, not just the top 12), we need to recruit better and coach better. It’s just that simple. The NIL and Portal will make it tougher for Clemson.

We will be back in the playoffs one day, but it will be a playoff with 12 teams in it and not 4. We will face more competition from within our own conference (FSU, UNC and yes Miami). The road will be tougher, but it will make for some great regular season games.

That is the new reality.

Exactly. We could do it with smoke and mirrors with that level of talent, but not this level. When we were good I kept thinking “Wow, imagine how good we’ll be when we fix the line.” But we never did it. We just keep ignoring that obvious opportunity for improvement, and hoping to paper over it with crazy ultra talent at QB and receiver. That isn’t going to work anymore. We need to make some big changes to our offense, and we don’t have coaches who’ve ever done that, so it may get rough.

To me it is so simple. Go to the portal and look at every grad student OL guy. If they’re all conference in any FBS conference or top FCS conference, get them (if there are too many take the top 3 or so). Since they are grad students Dabo may consider them righteous enough to play. They will already be big. They will already know the job. Just plug in new ones every year. This is a way to get great value from the portal without stepping into the sleazy aspects of the portal.
