Comparing Clemson Basketball Coaches

Feb 17, 2015, 9:50 PM

Quite a few posters criticizing and defending Brownell's performance lately. Here are a few facts and figures to help inform the arguments (apologies for the lack of formatting):

Coach Overall% ACC% Top half of ACC
Bill Foster .595 .372 .333
Cliff Ellis .576 .412 .250
Rick Barnes .607 .438 .500
Larry Shyatt .455 .250 .000
Oliver Purnell .605 .446 .429
Brad Brownell .563 .476 .800

Ellis, Barnes and Purnell each made it to the NCAA three times. Brownell has been once. Interesting to note that Brownell has the highest conference win percentage of our last six coaches and he’s finished in the top half of the ACC every year but once.

I personally like BB and think he is doing a very good job. If KJ had stayed for this year we would really be a force, but with his departure we lost the go to guy. If BB can get a guy like Terrance Ogalsby (sp?) (can shoot and make from anywhere on the court) we would be very very good. It has taken a while for this group to jell, they are getting there, We may not make the NCAA, but I can see a deep trip into the NIT again. Also, we only loose two of these guys and have another big in the pipe, so next years team will be better.

Another interesting stat to see would be how his teams

have finished in league play versus pre-season projections. Seems to me like BB's squads have outperformed these every season he's been here. Had KJ returned this year, we still probably wouldn't have garnered more than a 5th or 6th place pre-season pick, though we'd likely be sitting higher in the standings once again.

I hope Brownell can get it done, but I understand a growing frustration in the fan base also that wants more. I don't see us regressing from where we are now over the next few years, but if we were to I would feel finding a replacement would become justified.

thank you for bringing facts to an otherwise desultory

and pathetic show of "Mob Mentality" on this board.

I personally appreciate the attempt at reasonableness.

Great post that shows what is killing us...

And that is overall record. Winthrop and Gardner-Webb were absolutely horrific losses. I know they were early, but name we one player on either of those teams that was recruited by Clemson... Those are the games that take you out of the tournament at the end of the year.

We have our record now with two extra wins and two less losses with those teams, then we're in the hunt.

To be fair, ACC has been watered down lately.

Feb 18, 2015, 8:32 AM

The top half of the ACC when it was a 9 team league was UNC, Duke, Maryland, and then whoever was good at the time out of Wake/State/UVA/GT. Then there was FSU and Clemson at the bottom. Miami, VT, and BC have all been pretty lousy programs overall since they joined the conference and a lot of those other teams that used to be very good have been down. Adding Cuse, Louisville, and ND should have the league strong again, but it's been down for about 10 years now. I would say 2004 was the last year of ACC dominance.

We Are not winning the "Big" Games

Feb 18, 2015, 10:07 AM

Quick look see .... except for rare exception (ie Duke last year), we don't have (few) signature wins ... yes, winning more ACC games, but not beating teams (overall) that says you can compete with the "elite".
