I don't think the Repubs want to fix that border until after the election. They know it's a killer for Biden. In polling the economy is the top issue, but although a distant second, the border is a major concern. Something like 19% of the population who were surveys have it as their top issue

True, but I pounting out that the Repubs in Congress don't want the problem fixed at the moment. The border patrol needs way more funding for innovation and more officers. There also has to be rule changes for illegals/immigrant asylum seekers. Repubs like the prob at the moment. Its the lesser of two evils if its rid of Biden and helps them gain some sears in Congress.

Their benefit is enough to fund every fire department in the country

And probably every police department as well.
They send $55 billion a year back home to Mexico. Another $20 billion to other central American countries. That's a lot of labor. Plus whatever they spend living here. Plus the work they do, yeah, more than pay for themselves, overall. Including the BFE, Texas Fire Department, and even their health care. I've seen them disappear from workers comp claims. They don't want to tick off the employer, so they take their broken leg back to Mexico for treatment rather than having their employer file a WC claim and not hire their little brother who is en route to work for the same frame carpenter contractor.
Sucks to be the fire department or doctor/hospital that has to rescue/treat them for hypothermia and hyperthermia, and dehydration and malnutrition, and other junk as they risk it all to get here to work. But net, yeah, they pay for themselves, and then some. We enjoy the "then some" btw.

They are definitely needed. That said, what's the perfect balance between a border that isn't so porous and getting the workers we need? I wonder how everyone wins. On a similar note, I owned a few ice cream shops in Hungary, still a part owner of a chicken restaurant. Anyway, getting labor is really tough in Hungary. Theyvare well educated and want more now with all of the tech firms etc opening up there. The real reason it is tough is they don't want immigrants from certain areas. The Syrians and other refugees from mainly Muslim countries prompted Hungary to clamp down. The cops woukd even beat them at bus stops. Not having labor is tough. On the other hand, they want Hungary to stay Hungary.

Irony is, ultimately, it's republicans who are the architects of everything
Dec 31, 2023, 10:47 AM

republicans hate. A pub left the gold standard. Pubs gave us NAFTA. Pubs started the open-borders policies. Pubs set the stratospheric rise in the national debt in the 80's. The inflection point for everything was the 1980's. Higher debt, more spending, lower taxes, losses in manufacturing, increasing trade deficits, increase illegal immigration, NAFTA, decline of middle class, etc. Trickle down allows all of that to make us prosperous, according to the 1980's republican economists.
And it works. And democrats were on board the whole time. Pubs get their huge military and won the cold war, dems got their social programs expanded. Only now does the GOP have buyers remorse. And both parties are desperate to distance themselves from something most people don't even recognize much less understand. Hence our most recent Congress did less than any other Congress in history. Passed what 10, 12 bills? I forget. Abysmal. They're scared, both parties. Dangerous times. And for some reason we can't seem to find anyone else to run the free world other than a narcissistic populist, and a demented, shuffling, mumbling octogenarian.

Ignoring the fact they aren't "illegal" in an analysis of "illegal citizens", it also purposefully ignores their contributions now and later in life while counting their "costs."
Garbage analysis, and I think you know it.

P.P.S. You should learn to take your own advice...
1
Dec 30, 2023, 10:45 PM

|
Even in your own "evidence" for your argument...
..."it is true that immigrants inherently increase the size of GDP."
"The National Academy of Sciences in another formal study of immigration, The New Americans, proclaimed: Immigration will affect only the size of the economy: more GDP will be produced. The United States will be a bigger economy.
"Harvard economist George Borjas, the nation’s leading immigration economist, amplifies on this point. According to Borjas, immigrant workers (legal and illegal) “in the labor market makes the U.S. economy (GDP) an estimated 11 percent larger ($1.6 trillion) each year.”
Sure, he attempts to spin that information into a negative by mainly using negative language where he makes it sound bad which is probably why when you read it (lol), you thought it supported your "argument."
I also like that he still has to try and include the children of illegal immigrants receiving the same benefits as other citizens to try and make his financial argument sound more persuasive. The subtext on that is awful.
and wrong...
from the NAS report:"The children of immigrants (the second generation) are among the strongest economic and fiscal contributors in the U.S. population, contributing more in taxes than either their parents or the rest of the native-born population."

give that as a reason. And if we do need the cheap labor that desperately, the answer is to allocate sufficient resources to allow enough cheap-labor-providing immigants to get in legally ... not just bypass the system in violation of existing laws.

released into the U.S. without having legal staus. They have no visa or green card, and have not been approved for assylum. Instead, they are given court dates in the distant future, usually years down the road, at which time their legal status will be determined. I'm not an immigration attorney and I can't quote the stutute and section. I just know that people are coming here and getting in without going through the immigration process because the system has a years long backlog.

Immigrants are being "paroled", or exempted from the usual process, in record numbers. This program has been massively expanded unilaterally by the Biden admin, bypassing congress, to get more immigrants into the U.S. and get around the traditional process used to allow immigrants to legally enter and stay in the U.S.. Technically legal I think, but this method was intended to be used in a limited way for targeted groups in special situations. Biden has clearly abused it to advance his party's agenda.
Traditionally, to enter and remain in the U.S., immigrants had to have legal status, which meant a visa or green card, which required an immigration hearing, which now has a years long backlog. It appears the Biden administration has decided to go around that by applying the law in a way it was never intended to be applied. The fact that sanctuary cities no longer want these immigrants exposes the whole thing as a farce.

You forgot to mention that migrants under this "lawful program" have a US sponsor and a large portion of these migrants are Ukranian (they're white, so that should make MAGAts feel at ease). I can't stop LOLing at how pathetic your attempt is to defend the "not enforcing immigration laws" narrative. You're exhibit A for someone who chooses to be spoonfed misinformation. You need to do a deeper dive on Google and see what you can come up with.

What constitutes a large portion? I'm no supporter of Ukrainian immigration btw. The damage has been done already from decades of illegal immigration from our own Southern neighbors. The immigrants from Ukraine and other Eastern European countries amounts to no more than a few condiments at a Chinese Buffet anyway.

I acknowledged that expanding the parole system by executive order is legal. Something is not adding up, however. About 4.5 million have entered the U.S. illegally over the last 2 years, but only about 200k have been deported. How did the remaining 4+ million become legal? Where are they? I know you just troll and want to bash, but I'm really trying to understand.

Are you using the CBP “encounters” numbers to get to 4.5 million over two years? From what I gather, that was is the combined number of apprehensions and expulsions at the border. 1) I don’t think they all make it in and 2) 4.5 million encounters != 4.5 million people; the same person could try to cross 10 times in two years.

Until I read yesterday, I didn’t know the difference between removal and return. Removal is a court order that come with criminal penalties if they re-enter. Return is flying them back voluntarily- faster but doesn’t escalate re-entry to a crime. As we slowly find the families for the children Trump took from parents, they are beng “returned.” There’s still around 200 time go.
Imagine if we had been stricter with German immigrants who claimed to be Swedish and came here to open whorehouses? That’s right, the Trumps would still be in Germany.
