Baseball finish question..

If umps erroneously called Charleston runner out at 1st while their runner on 3rd scored..
why doesn't their runner crossing home plate get the tying score run since the inning & game was NOT over as thought due the wrong call by the ump?
I concur, in fairness, with the Charleston coach in that the run should have counted and thus score was 4-4.
What say you?

I agree. That was a bit strange.

Did not see it LBB, but it sounds what you are explaining that the run should have counted. Would like to see if I can find the play.
I had started doing something and came back and we were up 4-3.

They saw it as without the bad call the runner likely wouldn’t have scored. Can’t grant an out, so you move him back. Was it the right call? Seemed close.
But this was a crap show of a crew all day.

The rule in question

Appendix E , Section 2 , Administration rule 11
11. If the reversing of a call results in the need for decisions on the placement of base runners, the umpire crew shall use their best judgment to determine their locations as if the call had been made correctly
From: http://www.ncaapublications.com/productdownloads/BA24.pdf (page 116)
Clearly, the ump believed that the runner would've not tried for home (or would've not made it safely) without the delay and erroneous signal.

However the erroneous call definitely impacted the play. You have to ask yourself how long after the final out is called so you continue to play? Our FB looked to the umpire who ended the game, at that point why should you be in the hook for what happens after that? Clearly the out call influenced the play at the plate, so I understand sending him back.

Disagree….not so sure that the runner would have scored if the call at first was safe. If safe was called….the first baseman would have made the throw to home sooner…..no way a runner scores from second on an infield grounder without an error

blows.he was called out so the 1st baseman thinks or should think the game is over. that is the rule & the same call if the Shue is on the other foot

The game would have been over with the "out" called at first. No matter what happened afterwards. Umps did the review and correctly placed the runner back on third.

That's a fair question to ask bill and I'm glad you did. Very understandable for the CofC coach to be frustrated but still glad the rule worked in our favor for the W.

Bill, Many times in the past Clemson has been screwed by incompetent umpires. This time CofC was screwed. As you saw the play at first was not even close. That ump should be fired but will probably get a raise.

The runner started from 2nd base. It was only after the runner was called out at first did the runner advance past third. Back to third he goes. If the runner was called safe at first the first baseman probably would have thrown out the runner at home.
