DW4

Oct 6, 2016, 10:09 AM

Is it possible that we're seeing DW4 through Tiger eyes and a lot of other people see something we don't? I honestly think he is head and shoulders above every other quarterback out there but an NFL executive said he wasn't even the best qb on the field Saturday, along with Todd McShay saying late 1st round. I believe he's gonna have to enter the NFL the same way he's handled his entire life, and that's by showing and proving the haters and doubters wrong.

With his present skills, Jackson would last three games in the NFL! He has a LONG way to go to be an NFL superstar.
Tell me the name of the last NFL QB who was the teams leading rusher. I'll wait for the answer

yeah but the guy who lost and has a Heisman moment on an incompletion is? DW is exceptional. If you cant see that then there is no point explaining it

As an outsider...

Oct 6, 2016, 10:41 AM

I'm putting on my flame retardant skivvies because I am sure that this will raise the ire of some of your fan base. As an outsider watching Watson this year, there is something missing from his game that he had last year. It's hard to put specifics on it, and that's also not to say that he's not a great quarterback. So I'll just call it the "Jaemis Winston-It-Thing". Not sophomore co-ed molesting Jaemis, but the freshman "I don't care what it takes to win, I am going to throw off balance downfield on a rope to get a first down in a way no one else could do" thing...

To the naked eye, Watson seems to get shut down for extended periods of times during games. He's not Watson 2015 which that didn't seem to happen as much (from what I remember) where he would go out and impose his will on any defense at any time. Jackson seems to be the guy that has that "JW-I-T" this year. Statistically he had the better game last week.

That said, on both of these QBs (Jackson and Watson), I don't see either of them long for QB in the NFL. Read option mobile QBs don't do so well in the league. The only one that has been successful has been Cam Newton, and he's a freak of nature the likes of which I don't think we'll see again in our lifetime. If you go back and watch him in his season at Auburn, he was so much better than anyone on the field at any time, it was just plain unfair. And that includes his own team. In the NFL, he's just so big that he can sustain the abuse. Other similar QBs we've seen: Vick was great, but got killed. RG3 was the same way. Johnny Football... well... I don't think either Watson or Jackson are stocky enough (for lack of a better term) to sustain the extended beating that being a mobile QB in the NFL will bring. They'll have to drastically change their game philosophies to have extended success in the league.

That said, he's an excellent college QB and ate our lunch several times, so my opinion may be skewed...

DW4 does not have to run to be effective. He will be great in the League IMO. He has great pocket awareness and a great arm. I believe George Whitfield knows more about the position than any of us and he believe DW is one of the best he has ever seen or coached.

There are certainly examples of mobile quarterbacks not named Cam Newton that do survive. Russell Wilson and a younger Drew Brees come to mind, along with Aaron Rodgers. Just because DW4 is a read option QB now does not mean he won't be able to learn a new system. I think his brainpower is what is being underestimated.

That's fair. But as I said before, he'd have to adjust his game drastically from what it is now. If he can do that successfully, he may be a great QB in the NFL. If he doesn't, he probably won't. That's a pretty big flier to take on an important position, so I could understand why an "anonymous NFL excec" would say that. However, it is hypocritical to then turn around and say that Jackson is a sure fire 1st round in the same breath. I don't see either of them surviving in the NFL if they DON'T make changes to their philosophies.

Absolutely. Jackson can try to hurdle people in the NFL, and he will get denutted.

I concur. He's tall and a heck of an athlete, but he's also a spindley thin guy. While he can survive doing that kind of stuff in college, he'd get crushed in the NFL.

Re: DW4

Oct 6, 2016, 10:44 AM

Just know this. When Jackson has been pressured as he was in the first half of his last 2 games he's not a very good QB. Teams are going to look at how Clemson and Marshall blitzed him in the 1st halves and the results. If they can do that for an entire game he'll never make the throws to beat you. the teams will make him beat them with his arm with a quick rush and I think he will flop. His advantage is when he breaks containment he can run for a while but just watch teams to start placing a nickel back on him as a shadow and blitzing him. His stats will start to fall from here on out. Go Tigers.

I disagree. If you spy him he will make that man miss. He will not face a D that can contain on the blitz like we do. Our D will be by far the best he has and will seen. Yes the TOs hurt and gave them the ball more but he is still amazing. He will destroy almost every D he sees. This is including Houston IMO.

He has missed on some long balls and tried to force some throws... this won't last the season...

The only real knock on Watson is his INTs

Oct 6, 2016, 12:09 PM

he's going to have to do a better job protecting the balls in the NFL. He tends to trust his arm a bit too much down in the red zone.

Other than that, he's got all the skills needed.
