Article by Shaking the Southland

Dec 18, 2021, 9:28 AM

says the upcoming bowl game could set the future for Clemson football. I believe that nothing could be further from the truth. In the short period of time between the start of bowl practice and the bowl game there is no way to install a new offensive or defensive scheme.
This bowl is all about the extra practices Clemson gets to improve on fundamentals and nothing more.
The future of Clemson football will be decided during the 2022 football season.

STS sounds a little too melodramatic about this game.

Dec 18, 2021, 9:35 AM

Iowa State is a pretty good ball team, and, given our offensive struggles this year, I expect a hard fought game. Pretty sure everyone else does, as well.

Either way, next year is a new team, with some new coaching philosophies sure to be on display. This bowl game will not be the curtain raiser on that. It will just be the coaches doing their best to maintain the status quo, while injecting some new enthusiasm.

I agree. Dabo has even said we still

Dec 18, 2021, 9:37 AM

got what we got. The things that worked well the last 2 games offensively will be the things we see. I'm sure Streeter will throw a few things in, but we still have an OL and WR corp depleted by injuries.

I'll say this, if we can run the ball on ISU I'll be very encouraged. Their defense is solid.

I just hope that Streeter is one of those that can think fast on his feet, and don't depend on having to follow a scripted plan made from watching film bc, things that teams do from one game to another, and what a DC saw would work well against Wake, he may not use when he is up against Clemson, and the play caller has to make quick in game changes. If they wait until half time to review and make changes, a lot of times that cab be to little, to late!!!! We use to be a lot better 2nd half offense than we were this season, IMO!!!

WRONG

Dec 18, 2021, 9:40 AM

What article?
I read STS all the time and I have not seen anything that suggest that. Some people who comment may have indicated this but your statement is completely false.

Kantor states he thinks a good performance

in the Bowl game is crucial in his article on the staff changes.

So what? The original comment notes the future of the program is at stake. Totally different criteria. Can’t see that?

So many of you on this site think anytime someone doesn’t say Clemson is perfect, the staff is the best and that Dabo is god claim the poster is a coot. The lack of maturity is amazing.

I don’t suppose you care to comment on how Ryan is totally sold on the new staff changes in his STS article or are you oblivious to facts? Don’t answer, I know where you stand.

Most meaningful post in this thread.

Why should I?

Dec 18, 2021, 12:35 PM [ in reply to Re: Kantor states he thinks a good performance ]

That wasn't the topic. I summarized what Kantor said about the Bowl, which was the topic.

My personal opinion of the Bowl is it means nothing for next year other than practice time. I think continuing the streak of 10 wins is meaningful. I don't expect a big change in O or D because we're still down 20 or so scholarship players due to injury.

It doesn't give us any indication of what happens next year as we'll have basically 30+ additions to the roster we don't have in 10 days and schemes will be established in regards to that roster

Useless

Dec 18, 2021, 2:34 PM

Kantor never said that. You’re being disingenuous at best.

But feel free to try and discredit a writer without any real knowledge as to what he wrote or believes.

This is the title of Ryans article on STS:

“I’ve Been Convinced, Clemson’s Internal Promotions May Be Wise“

Wait...What? Seems the 2014 Oklahoma bowl game would refute that conclusion! Coaching changes, and the new coaches changed the offense to one to make Stoudt (currently on our coaching staff) shine...Yes, you can change the plays in prep for a bowl game!

You are correct..we had a plan for Joe Paterno in the Bowl back in
the 80's that he hadn't seen.

Agree with you and jprich that it can be done. I think you will see a couple new wrinkles as suggested above but in both the examples cited, we had the Jimmy and Joes. You'll see, imo, the same offense we saw in the wake, scar game. Lot more 21, 22 personnel and a whole lot of kobe and ship. Except in this game, we better take that extra back or TE and get them open in space over the middle because from what limited sample size I've seen in isu, their d is a lot stronger and sound than wake, scar.

That article could have been written by most fans of any college football team.

1. This next game is the most important game in our history. If we lose it, we're doomed. It's tie to fire the coach, burn it all down and start over.

FSU fans after starting 0-4.
Michigan fans after losing to Ohio State last year.
Clemson fans after the third loss this year.

If UGA fans lose to Michigan or Bama, message board will be filled with Dawg fans calling for Kirby to be fired. "He can't win the big one."

Jim Valvano used to say this: I spend two days before every game convincing my players this is the most important game of their lives. Then I spend an hour after every game convincing them it really didn't matter. All that matters is the next game.

Yeah this game will tell us absolutely nothing about the future of Clemson football, whether we beat them down or get beat down. That’s just silly.

I for one think the performance in the bowl game is crucial. Let’s go way back and look at the official death of the Ford era, which occurred when Clemson was crushed against Cal in the citrus bowl in 1992. What Hatfield put on the field next season was absolutely pathetic. Then I think back to West’s first big ball game versus Syracuse in the gator bowl in 1995 where we were crushed 41-0 and then opened the next season 45-0 vs North Carolina. I think we all knew right then and there West was going to be fired at some point. Fast forward to Clemson versus Texas tech and the Champs bowl I think 2002, when in Bowden’s fourth year, his team absolutely got shredded And looked slow and unprepared. I knew right then that Tommy Bowden would never win anything at Clemson. Then enter Dabo and our first orange bowl appearance in 30 years and once again we get crushed and embarrassed in a high profile game by West Virginia which brought about the changes that lead to a national championship. Then think about in 2014 when we lost Chad Morris, put in our back up quarterback, and destroyed Oklahoma… which set the tone to the next season where we made a national championship appearance.

My point here is either a poor or a great showing in a bowl game can greatly influence the momentum of the program. I think the new coordinators need to have a good showing if we can expect to be back in the playoff next year.

Re: Article by Shaking the Southland

Dec 18, 2021, 12:59 PM

And before the Tiger net police chime in, I do know Danny Ford left at the end of the 1989 season, but the program still had the momentum that he had built until 1992

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Key takeaway here is Dabo is still here

Dec 18, 2021, 1:20 PM

and Hatfield and West are not. Hatfield blow out to Cal was in his second year. We beat Illinois 30-0 in 1990 going 10-2.

West was in over his head from the beginning. The foundation of the program is light years from where it was then so as to have no comparison.

We're depleted. Hopefully we build on the run game that was so effective the last 2 games. Unless Ngata makes it back we're still starting two true freshmen and Will Swinney at wide out.

No one is installing a new anything. Dabo is still our headcoach and if he wanted something new installed he wouldn't have hired people trained by himself, Jeff, Tony and Brent.

If there are any significant changes it might be play calling, personnel due to injuries or the rhythm of plays being called in a different order or in different situations. Imo, most any changes which could have been done to make Clemson more successful on the field have already been done for this year.

Next year will begin as always with a bit of a different attitude over the past five or six years. No longer will I relax knowing that Dabo is dragging his feet to manufacture adversity. I am so looking forward to the change and another year of anxiety, excitement and drama.
