Anyone Have Hiatus Hernia?

Some days this thing kicks my butt. It’s more than acid. Lifting heavy objects or my kids straight up, bending over repetitively like playing catch with the dog, and driving or sitting for more than a couple hours really triggers symptoms. Acid, brain fog, heart palps, anxiety, fatigue.
I heard surgery does not work. I just try to eat less and focus on position when sitting. Episodes usually last a few days.

Last I saw, surgery was like a 90% success rate but its not my area of medicine so I cant be sure... If symptoms are that bad I'd consider it

I know of several acquaintances who have had the surgery which helped for a while and then the hernia returned for two. One is still doing well. The difference is the two that returned did not change their lifestyle, ate lots of "bad" foods, etc. The successful one maintained a relatively healthy diet, but not frantically strict; just a healthy diet. IMHO, if you do not have the surgery, you will have to adhere to a somewhat strict diet and still have some problems.

There is a new surgery that works pretty good. I had one 30 years ago that actually healed on its own. I had to totally adjust what I was eating. Vegetables and lean meats only. No starches or flours. No sugars. It only took about a month until my symptoms went away. I stayed on diet for a few years and went back to regular eating. Reflux never came back.

You had reflux...I doubt you had a hiatal hernia, or it was

a very minor one. There is no way the one my wife had (grapefruit size)would have healed on it's own!

I had a hernia. Confirmed by scope. Doc said they can heal, but it is rare.

My wife had terrible acid reflux for years...thought she would just have to live with it...had an upper GI done and found out she had a large hiatal hernia, grapefruit size they said. The top of your stomach gets up through the opening in the diaphram, either inside or outside the esophagus.
As I said, my wife had terrible reflux, couldn't lay down less than four hours after eating supper. Since the surgery, she never gets reflux...can go straight to bed after eating!
There are some great YouTube videos, showing the procedure.

have had a mild h/h situation for quite a few years.what has helped me is not eating or drinking anything after 10 PM except water.i also elevated my bed about 9" at the headboard,so that my head is well above where my feet are.sounds funny, but it has been very helpful.and of course there are the over the counter acid reducers.stress reduction and weight loss can also be positive as well.whether you choose to follow suggestions and/or surgery, hope the results bring relief.

I do…bothered me most of my life. Multiple endoscopies to remove food lodged in my throat.
Then one day I had an appendectomy and ever since almost all of my issues have subsided.
From everything I’ve heard the two are unrelated, but that’s when my problems went away.

Yes I also have one but it is Hiatal Hernia and it occurs at the base of the esophagus and the beginning of the stomach. It’s a bulging of sorts and if you are not careful it can be detrimental. Staying away from high acid foods, carbonation, over-eating are some of the things you should avoid. Medication is an excellent source of control so see your physician. Surgery is your last resort. Good luck!
