anybody get their light bill for last month yet??!?!

Feb 5, 2014, 9:56 PM

mine was almost 3X normal.

Usually my monthly bill is around $60-70. This time, $180. I almost NEVER bust $100.

I feel sorry for you regular $200/mo folks.

Light bill is usually $40 in Winter.

Feb 5, 2014, 10:02 PM

Gas bill on other hand will be about $100. One story house money saver.

Last Month's bill went down 17% for me.

Feb 5, 2014, 10:27 PM

I just installed Nest Thermostats.

Went from $4.36/day in energy to $3.72/day for a 3-story house.

heat pumps + 30 degree weather = pepper angus***

Feb 5, 2014, 10:35 PM

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yeah, heat pumps suck for actual cold weather

Feb 5, 2014, 10:52 PM

great in our "normal" temperate weather, but they accomplish almost nothing when its below freezing.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A heat pump is basically AC in reverse

Feb 6, 2014, 9:42 AM

Which works with diminishing results down to about 40 degrees. Below that you have to use the heat strips, which is big $$$$.

Gas heat is the best by far, and a LOT cheaper. But the problem is companies like SCE AND G boost the price of gas up WAY higher than normal profitability to offset the ridiculously expensive electric customers. They have done it even more this winter because they have taken several coal fired electric plants offline (thanks EPA/Obama). So you end up PAYING roughly the same for gas or electric heat.

I get my electricity from a co-op and it's far cheaper than SCE&G. They don't have to worry about gas or profits. I wish they had a gas co-op as well that didn't have to worry about electricity or profits.

SCE&G gets me for about 250-300/mo in winter and

Feb 5, 2014, 11:18 PM

300+ per month in the summer.

Their rates have gone up every year since I bought the house in 2003.

I hate electric companies that are basically monopolies because you have no other option.

Feb 6, 2014, 12:02 AM

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

For a co-op, there aren't really any "investors"....

Feb 6, 2014, 7:13 AM

co-op's are member/owner deals.

I almost all of Berkley's area, a customer can choose them..

or SCE&G or Santee Cooper.

That clears that up then.

Do what?

Feb 6, 2014, 7:58 AM

Reminds me of a few years ago. I was at Blue Ridge Electric, setting up to get power on at a piece of paradise, up the mountain. Minimum bill was $20. No big deal. Costs me $35 a month to run a refrigerator and heat tape, on the well pump.
Anyways, while I'm there, dude comes in and tells girl at the next "window" that he needs to pay his bill but, doesn't have the bill with him. So, she asks the address and he gives it to her. She finds it and says, "that'll be $17.33." W T F?

2009_nascar_champ.gif flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Duke's Equal Payment Plan.

Feb 6, 2014, 8:33 AM

I have not had to pay a power bill for 3 months straight. Now, my power bill for the next 10 months will be $64 per. I will make adjustments during the spring and fall, keep windows open so as to not run the AC, to soften the settle up month of December. We will see.

This past year's settle up month was -$151.00
