...we might need a portal just to track 'em all!
After a fellow poster's on-point comparison between our 2023 depth chart and the Championship squads of 2016 and 2018, it got me thinking.
Navigating the modern landscape of college football, especially with the rise of the portal, feels a lot like the job market. You don't spill to your current boss that you're eyeing other gigs unless you're pretty sure there's a desk with your nameplate waiting somewhere else. Similarly, players want some assurance from powerhouses like Clemson before diving into the portal's unknowns.
Adding to this complexity, college football now mirrors a job in more ways than one, especially with the advent of NIL. Players are not just representing schools; they're building personal brands and seeking endorsements.
Dabo’s philosophy for Clemson Football, about molding young men and not just seeking victories, is commendable. But when you stack our 2023 lineup against the titans of 2016 and 2018, it’s clear: adaptation is necessary.
Dabo's reluctance to dive deep into the portal waters comes from a place of integrity. But there's a middle ground. Ethical, behind-the-scenes conversations with potential transfers can still align with Clemson's values.
I have always admired Dabo's commitment to developing men on both the gridiron and in life. But as the game evolves, with NIL and the portal redefining the playbook, Dabo needs to adapt and according to many on here, he is doing just that.

The problem is many of the high-profile eventual transfers are being contacted about their PTP deals before they enter the portal. In addition to those caliber guys looking for a lucrative PTP deal, it also constitutes tampering by the team (collective) contacting them. I don't see Dabo playing this game. Nor should he really.
Sadly no portal player cares about the culture at Clemson or at any school. It's all about NIL. To be honest, I don't know if I would be much different.
