Basketball poll rankings seem worthless.

Between Thursday and last night, 21 top 25 (AP) teams played and a third of them lost to lower-ranked or UR teams.
That seems to happen a lot.
So, why do they bother ranking bball teams in the first place, seeing as it seems so difficult to, with any degree of confidence, really nail down which are the 25 best teams at any given moment?
Do rankings have anything to do with anything im basketball, given NET and the like?
Or is it just a wasted exercise.

Tradition, good for the schools that are ranked and it gives people something to talk about. The same thing happens in football and baseball and will continue to happen because there are hundreds of super good athletes spread across the country.

Rankings are Ok. It reveals who are elite and who are not. There are two teams in my opinion who can go all the way in NCAA Basketball: UConn and Houston. Both teams have a lot of upside to them, not too many weaknesses, and two of the best coaches in the country in Hurley and Sampson. The rest of the country is hit-in-miss. UConn is actually good enough to repeat as National Champs.

Their coaches should be fired! Good coaches would’ve had their teams ready so that wouldn’t happen.

We would almost certainly be a 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament if the committee made their selections today. That's a top 20 seed nationally.
Would you rather be top 20 according to the selection committee, or top 20 according to sportswriters and coaches who vote in the weekly poll?
