After digesting both dinner and tonights game

1) Outstanding game. A big time win when we needed one badly. Hopefully a valuable stepping stone for salvaging a below par season. Having worked with some Notre Dame Alum, I relish a victory over the Irish. Additionally, the question needs to be asked after tonight about who RB1 will be next week.

2) This team still has major deficiencies. The turnover at the end had trouble written all over it. If ND was the caliber opponent of say FSU, we may have been looking at another devastating loss. Cade is just not an option QB. The fumbled pitch was awful and I believe he had a miss read in tbe endzone with both Mafah and Thomas in the backfield (it was the PI call on Ennis if Im not mistaken.) Option plays need to leave the playbook including read-option. Still think we need some coaching changes. 1 good win wont change that.

3) Defense played great. I was concerned with the crossing route success early after half but Wes seemed to have a good gameplan. I was worried at the end of the game he would go full conservative and play loose zone coverage, but he kept the hammer down. Trotter straight up balled out.

4) Lastly, offense once again went straight up turtle mode in the 4th qtr. Would be nice to see a couple downfield shots when ND was playing the run. We we're playing not to lose and to not turn the ball over. We turned the ball over late and still almost lost. Over conservative late offense seems to be a Dabo preference.

Just my thoughts.

Turned it over late and almost lost???

We were up by 8? The best they could have done was tie and to do that they would have needed a TD and 2pt conversion. We controlled the clock kept field position and relied on the D to hold the game. It was a smart football call.

No one cares about your thoughts. Especially 2 and 4.

Fair enough...still entitled to them. Given our penchant for losing leads in the 4th qtr as well as losing in overtime, I think I was right to be concerned. Dang glad we won, but the untimely turnovers have yet to be fixed.

Great analysis and spot on.

I don’t think there is any question about who RB1 should be. It has been obvious all year (and before) that Mafah is a true feature back.

Not sure the O-line was exponentially better. They definetly provided Cade a better pocket. In the run game, Mafah just seems to allow the play develop with patience then hits the opening. Ship plays with intensity, but more often than not plows straight ahead for little or no gain.

Yes a good running back can make an OLine look

Better, but I do think they blocked better today. Being more backups, perhaps Austin had not had much time to screw them up.

Agree, they did look improved and ND is no slouch on D-line. I had classes with Austin while at Clemson, seemed like a super good dude. Just think we didnt aim high enough when we hired him. Im stoked we won, but T-Net seems to have a short memory. 3 years of downward trend aren't fixed with one victory. Definetly a great stepping stone but I still believe changes are needed to the asst. coaching ranks.

Good points, agree!***
