Need a basketball coaching tip

Mar 3, 2014, 12:12 PM

Been a while since Ive posted here but ive gotten good advice before. Anyone have suggestions on a good defense to run when you are playing a team with one superb ball handler and two good shooters, I feel like a junk defense will get us torched. We lost by two last time and Im just wondering if I could do something a little different. Last time we played a 2-1-2, and mixed it up with a 13 chase.

and spelling errors, but here's an overview of the 5 base defenses in basketball. You'll probably want to hybridize a few of these, and experiment some in the first half to see what formations are the most problematic for the other team.

Man-to-Man: "Man-to-man" remains the most common defense in basketball, matching up defensive players one-on-one with the opposing team's offensive players. Off-the-ball defenders are coached to position themselves in the passing lanes, between their man and the ball, while the on-ball defender attempts to stay between his man and the basket. A man-to-man strategy allows the defense to employ pressure, force more turnovers, and seamlessly transition to proper rebounding position. Ultimately, superior offensive athleticism and defending the screen game serve as the greatest concerns for successful man-to-man defense.

2-3 Zone: The "2-3" zone emerges as the most simplistic form of zone defense, placing two defenders between the top of the key and three-point line and three defenders evenly spaced across the blocks and baseline. When an offensive player enters a defender's zone, the defender must match up with the player in "man" fashion. Teams with inferior athleticism or great length generally employ the 2-3 zone more frequently, while matching up to rebound serves as a considerable concern. Additionally, the 2-3 zone remains a viable option versus poor perimeter-shooting teams, as a change of pace defensive strategy in small doses, or during baseline in-bounds plays.

1-3-1 Zone: The "1-3-1" zone serves as the most commonly utilized zone defense in basketball, allowing the defense to play more aggressively, while trapping the ball and extending the defense more effectively on the perimeter. The defense's inherent weaknesses remain in the "short-corner" area (along the baseline), in rebounding, and versus a team with ballhandlers able to penetrate and dish efficiently.

Box & 1: The "box & 1" defense is typically employed versus an offense with a singularly dangerous scoring threat. One defender plays man-to-man on "the scorer," while the other four defenders play a "box" zone, matching up with offensive players entering their respective zones. The zone aspect of the defense allows the players to provide adequate help defense on "the scorer." Defending the lane serves as the most notable weakness of the defense, along with a well-spaced, perimeter-oriented offense also providing significant matchup concerns.

Full-Court Press: Defenses utilize the full-court press to apply pressure on the offense, dictate tempo, force turnovers, and is routinely used as a "comeback" tactic. The full-court press relies on end-to-end man defense, relying on aggressively trapping the ball and using the sideline and corners to the defense's advantage. Well-coached teams with poised ballhandlers and great spacing usually generate easy baskets when "breaking the press." Nonetheless, successful full-court pressure remains one of the most captivating strategies in all of basketball.

Mar 3, 2014, 12:22 PM

If it's youth, just pop open some bourbon on the bench and try to bang the moms. If it's high school, just pop open some vodka on the bench and try to bang the moms. If it's prison, just try not to get banged in the b-hole.

ok srs answer now that I know it's 6th grade girls

Mar 3, 2014, 12:33 PM

I would double the ball handler every time she touches the ball and try to frustrate her. Vary when you apply the double...sometimes full court, sometimes meet her at mid-court. Do this with your guards.

Put your 2 forwards on the high post, tell them to play zone and make them aware of the 2 shooters. Make sure they know you want every shot contested.

Plant your center right in the middle of the lane.

Unless you are dealing with a highly skilled group overall, you typically won't find that the other 2 kids on the team you haven't mentioned can beat you. They probably can't even make a layup. So defend 4v3 and leave 2 open if that makes sense.
