A few things I see after two BB games...

Nov 14, 2013, 11:35 AM

I love how athletic and versatile we are. We are pushing the ball more and really looking to attack and kick. I think we're going to find that we are a pretty good shooting team. Defensively, we are typical BB, but we can really pressure the ball and get in the passing lanes. We help so well that I think the lack of a big post player won't hurt us as much as expected.

I love taking three's in transition, and I love the coaching point on that. A 3 in transition is not always a bad shot. It creates opportunities for offensive rebounds that you don't have in your half court offense. It's really a better look than settling for one within your offense, b/c you have spread the floor and created opportunities for KJ and Blossomgame to get O boards.

I want to dispel the notion about us getting hurt by a lack of inside presence. Is that an obstacle to overcome? Yes. Will people hurt us inside some? Probably...

However, we are going to be a tough matchup for people. If they're gonna play man, they better figure out how they are gonna play Blossomgame and KJ. Those guys can stop out and take people off the bounce. With Roper and Harrison shooting well, they will have to make a choice on how much help they have.

It may hurt us some on the defensive end, but I think we are going to be a touch matchup offensively for a lot of people.

well said; good summation

Good observation, however

This team will struggle to finish above .500 this year. Hopefully we can get more talent in the next few years.

I think 10-8 in ACC and 20-11 overall

Nov 14, 2013, 12:27 PM

before ACCT is a very real possibility

That's where scheduling comes in...

Nov 14, 2013, 12:41 PM

We really didn't get many favors there, with road games at UNC, ND and Syracuse. However, we do get the last three games at home ... and the two away games before that are at GTech and at Wake. Both are winnable.

so if the guys develop, we could surprise folks late in the season.

That sounds a little optimistic to me.***

10-8 in the league is probably a little much to expect

Nov 14, 2013, 1:11 PM [ in reply to I think 10-8 in ACC and 20-11 overall ]

But I'd be disappointed with 3 pre-league losses. Need a win this weekend. Then we probably lose one in the Charleston tourney and at Arkansas. Need a win at Auburn as well and no slip ups ala the Coastal Carolina games the last 2 years. I'm hoping for 10-2 pre-ACC and 8-10 in the league. That would make us a bubble team that could play it's way in with a surprise or 2 in the ACCT. More likely NIT this year. Need guys like Nnoko and Djambo to develop. Blossomgame is as advertised. Really like our rotation at 1-2-3. Once we get in the league our SOS will climb steadily

Lets play someone first

Nov 14, 2013, 2:29 PM [ in reply to I think 10-8 in ACC and 20-11 overall ]

These games are good for us to get some confidence and for the guys to find their roles, but they mean nothing in terms of our ability to play in the ACC.

The tournament in Charleston will give us a much better measuring stick.

It's impossible to translate whipping high school basketball teams into ACC results.

I don't see any way we go above .500 in conference.

Nov 14, 2013, 12:30 PM

I don't really disagree with anything you said. There are some positives after seeing the game last night, and it will be fun watching the young players develop. We will present some match up problems, will probably upset a team or two, and will hang with a couple of more good teams right until the end. Still, we play in the toughest conference in the country (by far), and I expect plenty of frustrating scoring droughts and other reminders that we are a very young, often under-manned team that has a ways to go to compete in the top tier of our conference.

If you look at our conference schedule....

Nov 14, 2013, 12:35 PM

it's tough, but I think there are 10 wins out there .... and I don't think we see nearly the type of scoring droughts we're used to

I sure hope you are right. I guess I'll have to see it to

Nov 14, 2013, 12:59 PM

to believe it. I've always been optimistic early; I see all kinds of potential that just never materializes, and it always goes back to one thing - talent (or the lack thereof). We always look pretty good against the Delaware States of the world, and rack up a bunch of wins early, and against that level of talent, some of our younger players who have some potential, as well as some of our better players, are able to shine. Then, when conference play rolls around . . . reality. While I do think we are some better as far as basketball talent goes this season, I don't think it's dramatic. Match ups, more fast breaks, more up-tempo, a different kind of basketball, etc., etc., I still think there is a big talent gap and I think it will slam us in the face like it has the past few years, and I don't think there is any way to spin that away.

That's just my opinion, and I really hope I'm surprised by a winning record and mid-pack or better finish.

What it takes to go over .500 in ACC Play

Nov 14, 2013, 2:54 PM [ in reply to I don't see any way we go above .500 in conference. ]

So lets look at the schedule, specifically the road schedule...

BC, VT, Pitt, UNC, FSU, SYR, ND, GT, WF

Throw out Pitt, SYR, UNC, and ND as losses.
Optimistically we go 3-2 on the road at BC, VT, FSU, GT, and Wake.

So with 3 road wins you need 7 home wins to get to 10. Throwing out Duke as a loss, that means you need to win 7 of these 8 games...

FSU, WF, GT, UVa, NCSU, UMD, MIA and Pitt.

I'm just not sure i see us winning 7 of those 8 games. There's no room for slip ups at home.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

One of the biggest differences I've noticed...

Nov 14, 2013, 12:42 PM

...is they are moving the ball around with a sense of purpose, not just hoping someone will find a shot.

To some folks, I know it looks the same ... but there was a real method to the movement last night.

badge-donor-20yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-revdodd.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brownell is a motion guy, but with a lot of quick hitters

Nov 14, 2013, 1:30 PM

in the past, we've had to run a lot of quick hitters b/c we couldn't create shots and we didn't have the guys to run motion...

But now we are able to go both 4 out and 5 out motion, and our guys understand where to be, how to react to different things, and where the ball needs to go.

That will make all the quick hitters BB has much more successful.

what about Djitte and Djambo

Nov 14, 2013, 1:38 PM

how are they looking?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

IMO... young, raw, and extreme upside....

Nov 14, 2013, 1:39 PM

I think they are an upgrade from Devin ... and you may see that as early as mid-season

Very raw ... no one and dones there

But I think we all knew that. Thiswill be a learning experience inside for them.
