76er mentioned Clemson having a Model A in this post....

I attended my first Clemson game in the 70’s during the Red Parker era. I don’t remember us ever having one of those. I do recall them driving around a big Clemson helmet on the field. Does anyone have any pictures of this or a link to a Mintaka post perhaps?

I also remember Clemson and Georgia Tech Cheerleaders drag racing their school decked out Model A Fords down the field as part of the game festivities. Georgia Tech obviously called theirs the Ramblin' Wreck. I think we just called ours the Clemson Model A. ">

cheerleader on the running boards of a Model A, leading the crowd from Tillman Hall to Death Valley.
It was a chilly Fall day, as I recall well. Why? The cheerleader was yours truly.
The car had been donated by a Mr. Goode Thomas, a Clemson alum from Rock Hill, whose son, Craig, was a close friend and who, also, became a member of the cheerleading squad.
The car was painted in school colors and had (what I think) was a mache Tiger on its roof.
In those days at least a couple of cheerleaders were designated to lead the huge crowd down past Ft. Hill to the east entrance whereupon the two squad members would then join the other members at the top of the hill to lead the team on the run-down.
By the way another member and myself were next to Howard's Rock in September 1967, when the tradition of touching before the run-down started. Though the rock had been placed there the year before, it was that September 1967, when the tradition began. Thus, after the cannon fired, he and I were actually the first to slap the rock. (If you've never stood at the top of the hill, its steepness is acute, as is that confounded "bump," as I nearly busted my rearend a couple of times on the runs.)
Have no idea what happened to that car, but back then, it was a thing of beauty!

there to participate in! With what "Touching the Rock" has grown into , being able to say that you were the first, or even AMONG the first to do so, has got to be a very cherished memory.

being painted.
Memory isn't perfect, though, because I would have bet the farm it was a coupe, while the one shown is clearly a sedan.
I would STILL be willing to bet that GT's "A" is a coupe!

I remembered the GT Model "A" winning the race. Makes sense that it would have, if theirs is a coupe, and ours was a sedan with a Tiger on top. Theirs would have weighed a lot less. Since all Model "A's came with the exact same engine, they would have had an obvious advantage!

Ours was painted purple and orange. It may have been owned by someone private, and we borrowed it for the race? But, I do remember it being there. I am an old car guy, and that was certainly something you don't see every day!

It certainly wouldn't be that hard to at least recreate.

There weren't more than a gazillion Model A's made from 1928 to 1931. And, because of the numbers made, as far as collector cars go, they are still not that expensive.

I was there 1959-62. Cheerleaders rode an a-model coupe onto playing field.
