3-man defensive front .....

3

Sep 25, 2023, 9:09 AM

Not just because of this game, but whenever we have run it ................... I hope to never see it again, peewee, high school, college, pros ....... I hate it with a passion. Maybe run it with 8 seconds on the clock, opponent down by a score and on their side of the field. Even then I always want to see pressure on the quarterback.

I hope this is the last we see it this year ........ but coaches are stubborn ....... just to prove that they are right!

Many "things" in football, life even golf are situational...

You'd likely have to sit down in film with the coaches to understand or discuss each, whether it overall game plan, game clock/management and/or simply down & distance.

I haven't seen many, including Dabo, that were happy with the NFL prevent at the end of 1H.

I've been watching football longer than any of the Clemson coaches have been alive and have never seen it be effective in the long run. From the time I was a teenager ...... many years ago ...... I was always curious why a professional team could shut the other team down for an entire half and then give up a score in the last two minutes. I always considered the "prevent defense" one that prevented you from winning!

By the way, I know the theory behind it. Maybe it is solid, but I still hate it!

"I hate it with a passion" from the OG was soft served...

We have run 3 man in the past and will continue

Sep 25, 2023, 10:41 AM

to do so - there are also delayed blitzes and things you can call off of it. If you can get pressure with 3 which we do a fair amount, it floods the back with 8 guys - turnovers can often occur. For example, we were in 3 man and got pressure with it and a pick 6 the week before. I’ll have to go back and look at other times we ran it. Not sure if both pick 6s occurred off of this. Should we have stayed in it the whole drive? - nah but it is very useful at times. Also, 3 man rush and a blatant missed holding call on XT kickstarted thaf drive.

I assume that it has a place, as it would be run so much in the pros ...... but they really play a different game at that level. It probably has a place in college too, but I still hate it because it seems like it causes more problems than it solves. Statistically, maybe it doesn't, but it seems that way to me. With so much of football being coached according to computer models, as to what to do and when, maybe we should just let computers coach and the head men relay what the computers tell them.

Nothing wrong with a 3 man front. I like it. We suck at it, but that is not the fault of the scheme itself.

The problem is if you don’t get any pressure, the secondary can only hold on for so long. A good QB, who has all day in the pocket, will absolutely pick it apart.

It has its place

If you have 3 linebackers stunting at the line or bringing a corner blitz

But straight up rushing 3 against a mobile qb should be reserved for

3rd and 35

OR

Less than 4 seconds on the clock on the other end of the field

NFL seems to do fine with it. Kirby runs it regularly and stops run with it.

I dunno....

Utah don't have have an issue with a 3 man front....

They completely shut down a really good UCLA offense over the weekend...

Wiggins went out
Travis was going to lob to Coleman until they beat the backup

Well they ran a 3 man before the half then to start the 2nd half they brought more pressure and had Travis connected with Johnnie Wilson who was five yards passed the defense he could have ran for days.

Coach V used a three man defensive front in 2019 because he did not have the war daddies up front. Wes has the personnel to never go three man.
