Quick Thoughts of the Game

Sep 1, 2018, 3:47 PM

I think I’ll give more thoughts later when I have more time, but just a few quick observations/thoughts:

- I think Furman is a very disciplined team and had a solid game plan (attacking the edges/misdirection). Not to mention they brought back a lot of starters from a solid team last year. They certainly weren’t going to roll over like Kent State last season.

- With it being the first game of the year, you can blame “first game jitters” or “needing to warm up”, but, with this team being experienced and motivated, I was pretty disappointed by our team’s overall execution, focus, play calling, etc. especially in the first half.

The Bad:

- The O-line (run blocking was poor, often no push against a very undersized defense, inability to run the ball from our base offense, pass-pro left a lot to be desired)
- Play Calling (We’re obviously going to be conservative and rotate a lot of players against a team like Furman, but it left a lot to be desired. Lots of questionable calls and underutilization of skill players/advantages)
- Secondary (Obviously they weren’t tested much, but multiple PI’s - please don’t start that again - and being out of position often)
- Edge Setting (Was it just me? Or did it seem we couldn’t seal the edge effectively? We seemed slow at points. Idk if that’s a result of late reactions or what...Also, I’ll have to rewatch to know for sure, but was Isaiah Simmons out of position or missing assignments?)
- QB Inconsistencies (Both Kelly and TLaw flashed, but both also missed many throws. Not really complaining or worried, just pointing it out. I’ll give more thoughts on the QBs later.)

The Good:

- D-Line (Unstoppable. Otherworldly. Devastating. Deep. What else needs to be said?)
- Defensive Depth (1st, 2nd, and parts of 3rd string played well. Definitely going to be important building and maintaining depth in a long season. Secondary depth still worrying tho)
- Freshman. Freshman. Freshman. (Will this year’s freshman class go down as the greatest in Clemson’s history?? It’s looking more and more like it. TLaw, Lyn-J, Galloway, Kendrick, Ross, Xavier, Henry, on and on. WOW)
- Amari Rodgers (Don’t look now, but he very well may end up with the most catches, yards, and/or TDs this year. The man’s a monster.)
- Special Teams (How good does it feel that our special teams won’t lose us games this year? In fact, our special teams will actually contribute - and contribute greatly - to our success. Hopefully punting comes along tho.)

I tend to be negative and pessimistic so I always focus on the bad before the good (it’s a problem, I know...). But, nitpicking aside, this team is still everything I thought it was. Just clean some things up and watch out...All I know is, if we start off playing at A&M like we did in the first half today, I will definitely be worried...But in Dabo and this team I trust! Go Tigers!

I mostly agree. I think punting is going to be a problem all year and it may cost us a game. Play calling was head scratching in the first half. Overall, I'm very pleased too and the defense I knew was good but I did not know they were so deep.
