Quick Initial Thoughts from A&M

Sep 9, 2018, 8:45 AM

First off, “whew” is right...I know A&M is a very talented SEC West team with a very tough road environment, but regardless, we were expected to win, and win by double digits (according to Vegas). It looked as though that was going to be the case, but as with Clemson, when we had multiple opportunities to put them away, we squandered them...for once (at least against a respectable opponent) can we have a good, clean, well-executed, and/or dominate game where we don’t screw oursleves and I can watch stress free! That would be great thanks!!!

Second, all respect to A&M. Jimbo’s a good coach, Mike Elko’s a great D-Coor, Mond is/was a very talented QB and showed off why, the team fought hard and never gave up, the crowd never gave up, and they executed perfect gameplans on both sides of the ball. While and win is a win, most people outside of Clemson (maybe even some Clemson fans) thought A&M deserved to win. Looking forward to our game with them next year.

Quick Thoughts:

OFFENSE:

- Looks like the two QB system isn’t going to work, at least in games of this magnitude. Both flashed, but Kelly (while still making mistakes) looks like the guy.
- Poor play calling throughout the game. Etienne still can’t seem to get 10+ carries, no attacking of the middle whatsoever, no use of the TE, and super conservative with the lead. The same problems plaguing our team last year still persist.
- O-Line struggled. No push in the middle, pressure allowed all night, and Falcinelli playing his worst game of his career. It was a night to forget for the OL.

DEFENSE:

- Hopefully that was the annual “BV really struggles game” and no other team finds that kind of success.
- I think I’ve discovered the weakness of BV’s system (granted, it’s probably many defense’s weakness): A solid duel threat QB + a game plan to use TE’s, screens, and quick passes to nullify BV’s aggressiveness = Our defense struggles. Know that other teams will be watching this A&M film...
- Isaiah Simmons, while making a few big plays, struggled. We’re going to miss DOD this year...
- Did our LBs seem slow to anyone?
- Welp, outside of Trayvon, the rest of our secondary look questionable. Especially our safeties. Yes, A&M had great play-calls, Mond made unbelievable throws, their receivers made crazy catches, but the worst thing to see was receivers running WIDE OPEN. We need to get things fix here quickly.
- The DL played well and lived up to the billing. Although, I wish they weren’t as aggressive/recognized the screens and RB flare passes.

Overall, a win is a win. As stated, I’m pretty pessimistic and a realist, so I tend to focus on the negatives. But, ultimately, in the second game of the season, we went on the road into one of the most hostile environments in CFB and beat a solid and similarly talented SEC West team. While not pretty, I’l take that 10 times out of 10. Plus, i think this win will age well.

I believe we’ll get our issues ironed out over the course of the season, and luckily our schedule allows us to do that. Ultimately, all is well Tiger fam, all is well.

Go Tigers and God bless
