Questions about GPA's and SAT's from someone who is getting

old. When I was younger and in HS, the max you could get was 4.0 GPA and 1600 on the SAT. Now I see that it is possible to get a 5.0 and 2400 on the SAT. Is that accurate? Also, doesn't that mean that a student with 4.0 GPA and 1300 on their SAT isn't that big of a deal?

Those were the days. I had a 3.2 and 1080 out of state and they came in with a private jet with female "escorts" etc etc just begging me to attend Clemson. I think my Mom was bribed maybe 50k. Good times.

Correct, making an A in one of the AP classes (advanced placement) is worth 4.5 points. So that means you need above a 4.0 to look good to Clemson. Also someone posted that the avg SAT score for freshmen last year was 1460 I can't confirm that.

I believe AP are weighted to 5.0 for an A, with Honors classes being the 4.5.

I hope I am not mistaken, but the scores listed are based on the old format. I'm not sure if Clemson recognizes the new section of the SAT.
I do think the 4.0 - 5.0 scales discussion is interesting. I know different high schools use different scales, but I think most offer AP classes that score on the 5.0 scale. I don't think it is actually possible to get a 5.0 as AP classes are not available for every credit, but it could make it very difficult to compare.

Yes 5.0 is correct not 4.5, and small and rural schools are at a disadvantage. To teach an AP class a teacher must be certified in that. They can't afford to pay a teacher to teach a class with 4 students in it while other teachers have 40 students. Clemson seems to place more emphasis on SAT since that's a better way to compare students.

And AP classes and advanced classes are weighted heavier.

Honors courses and Advanced Placement courses

provide additional points to calculate your weighted GPA. At Wando, an Honors course provides an additional 0.5 basis points and advanced placement courses add 1.0 on your weighted GPA. A 5.0 could be a 100 average in a college prep course, a 95 average in an Honors course, or a 90 in an advanced placement course. A 6.0 reflects a 100 average in an Advanced Placement course.
Not sure about the SAT scores.
The average student admitted into Clemson in 2016 had a 4.64, a 1290 on the SAT and a 29 on the ACT.

Different schools do GPA differently. For instance. An athlete who gets A's in weightlifting and remedial English should not be equal to a mathlete who gets A's in calculus and theoretical physics.
They both get As which is a 4.0 but clearly are not the same...so schools have different ways to distinguish them.
The last time my daughter and I sat down with her guidance counselor she had like 3 versions of GPA on her transcript.

The SAT has/had a writing portion...

that is worth up to 800 additional points.
It is seldom used by admissions offices.
Just like in the old days they look primarily at the math and critical reading scores.

also note that the SAT was re-centered in 1995
Feb 14, 2018, 11:18 AM

if you took the test prior to 1995, the average CU student from that prior time period can add about 100-160 points(the higher you scored, the less the adjustment) to what you scored for comparison to today's score.

For GPA's, it varies wildly by state, by county, etc. North Carolina's GPA system is off a 6 point system, Texas has some with an odd 12 point system, some schools add actual points to the teacher grade, etc. As well, most GPA's on a HS transcript include non core/non academic grades, which colleges generally do not look at. Many colleges re-calculate a student's GPA to get a common GPA across their applicant pool.
As for the SAT, there was a shift to three sections (English, Math and Writing), all with an 800 scale, but the College Board then decided to redesign their test and merged the English and Writing, so as of Spring of 2016, the test is now on a 1600 scale again. The new SAT has an average that shifted up about 30 points or so from the old, most likely due to the changes made overall. As well, Khan Academy has linked up with the CB to provide free online tutoring that helps students in areas where their test results show lower performance.
Anytime you see self reported GPA's, it can vary wildly from what the college uses, as they are looking at their own HS's system of GPA, not a common one. As such, a GPA from North Carolina could be a 4.8 (out of 6.00), but be equivalent to one that is in the 3.80 range on a more traditional scale.

switched to a 5.0 scale 3 years ago - so the class of 2019 will be the first ones to graduate using the 5.0 scale.

"...from someone getting old". I suppose I barely qualify but let me tell you how tough it was trying to get in the University of Florida almost 80 years ago. First I had to walk to the Register's office with my high school transcript in hand and tell him I would like to be a Gator.. After a few minutes he said, "Mr. Joe21, you are accepted. That will be $27.00 for your tuition".
And you guys are complaining? (I wish I had a smilie to insert here)

SC just changed their grading scale last year
Feb 14, 2018, 1:22 PM
|
|
SC has dropped to a 10 point scale to 'be on an equal basis' with surrounding states... A:93-100 B:85-92 C:77-84 D:70-74 was the old standard
The complaint was that a student in GA could make a 90 for an "A", but in SC that would be a "B" and that was hurting in-state athletes as the major focus.
On GPA scoring, it now rewards a kid making a 100 over one squeaking out a 90...scale is like decimals on a ruler:
In the AP Courses it looks like this, but I don't know the others like Honors & CP. 100 = 5.8750 99 = 5.8125 98 = 5.7500 97 = 5.6875 96 = 5.6250 95 = 5.5000 94 = 5.4375 93 = 5.3750 92 = 5.2500 91 = 5.1250 90 = 5.0000
You can't get a perfect 5.875 with all 100's because of electives like PE, Art & Keyboarding aren't weighted. The Valedictorian at my kids school in Greenville (which is CU's #1 feeder in SC) had a GPA of about 5.35, a SAT of 1580/1600 and ACT of 35/36 and he is MIT bound.
